The Epidemiology Coordinating and Research (EPICORE) Centre has an excellent opportunity for a dynamic individual to join the team as a full-time Alberta SPOR Support Unit Consultation and Research Services Business Manager.

EPICORE Centre is an investigator-driven clinical trials and health outcomes research coordinating centre based in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry.  The mission of EPICORE Centre is, "to serve the Faculty and our community by generating new knowledge in the areas of health and health care through the design, execution, and analysis of clinical trials, health outcomes research and epidemiologic studies".

We are currently accepting applications for the position of Business Manager who will manage our business activities and lead our research studies services.  Reporting to the Director of EPICORE, this position will serve as primary contact to clients for all projects, provide leadership to stakeholders and work closely with the staff and the Director to ensure delivery of efficient project timelines and successful research study management.

The successful candidate will:

  • Develops a business plan which incorporates goals and objectives that support the strategic direction of the Platform and EPICORE
  • Develops, manages and supervises the implementation of the Alberta SPOR Support Unit's/EPICORE's business and operational plan
  • Establishes and maintains systems, policies and processes that optimize services offered, taking into account the numerous service delivery models offered by the Alberta SPOR Support Unit and EPICORE
  • Ensures that the operation of the organization meets the expectations of stakeholders and funders
  • Provides financial management, including the oversight and control of program funds to ensure optimum use of financial resources
  • Develops, implements and evaluates a plan for communications and public relations for the Platform, including a web presence, promotion of events and activities and general promotion of the Platform, Unit and EPICORE
  • Determines staffing requirements for organizational management and program delivery
  • Oversees the implementation of the human resources policies, procedures (NASA and AASUA) and practices
  • In conjunction with the Director, estimates and generates quotes for recommended research services; meets with stakeholders and team members to determine the service needs for each project; liaises with the team to ensure group consensus on budgets
  • Sets up agreements with SPOR contractors in 3 research centres; oversees the research support and provides managerial level administrative assistance to the PI on budget, Human Resources and equipment management
  • Leads weekly review of active projects; identify and prioritize tasks (with the EPICORE staff and the Director) to ensure efficient project timelines; provide statistics on research services received and present research results during laboratory meetings, seminars and scientific conferences
  • Documents study start up to close including monthly project reporting for review with the Director including maintenance of site logs; overall progression on all active projects; documenting communication with appropriate research Ethics Review Boards (REBs) and reporting of all serious adverse events (SAEs) to the investigator, sponsor and REBs
  • Performs monthly monitoring and review of revenues; monthly revenue forecasts generated by Department of Medicine (DoM), Finance; prepares reports and participates in periodic Financial Review Meetings held in association with DoM Senior Management and DoM Finance
  • In conjunction with the Scientific Officer, prepares and submits reports to SPOR and Alberta Innovates Health Solutions (AI-HS) on projects, researchers serve, consultations provided, publications and grants submitted


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Bachelor of Commerce degree with a focus on finance and accounting
  • 5-10 years of experience in business operations and financial management; experience and/or educational background in healthcare would be an asset
  • Professional accounting designation would be an asset, as would significant project management experience
  • Strong leadership skills to effectively manage research support provided by EPICORE Centre and SPOR contractors
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to organize information, facilitate and communicate clearly and concisely with stakeholders
  • Ability to work with flexibility, initiative, independence and accountability


In accordance with the Trust/Research Academic Staff Agreement, this position is for a 2 year term, with the possibility of extension, and offers a comprehensive benefits package found at: www.hrs.ualberta.ca and annual salary range of 71,198 - $97,922. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
