HEAD OF SCHOOL - PUBLIC HEALTH

Applications are invited for the Headship of the School of Public Health, one of seven Schools in the Faculty of Health Sciences, at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.

The School has a strong legacy of research excellence and makes a considerable contribution to the scientific and specialist training of both undergraduate and postgraduates in the Faculty of Health Sciences.  

This multi-disciplinary school consequently produces skilled public health practitioners and Scientist appropriately trained to address the range of public health needs and challenges within South African and African settings.

The position offers the potential for a motivated applicant to move the School’s teaching and research enterprise into an even greater level of achievement.

Responsibilities:

The Head of School will be responsible for providing the academic vision and leadership required to ensure that the School maintains and extends its position of excellence within the University and in the wider educational context.  

This will involve the management of all academic activities inclusive of teaching and research, student-related matters and the overall administrative affairs of the School, including human resources, financial management and general administration, as well  as engaging with key stakeholders including the communities around Johannesburg and further afield.

The Head of School will be responsible for the further development and promotion of scholarship within the school in order to enhance the academic excellence. The incumbent is also expected to embrace and drive the university’s principles of academic diversity.

Qualifications and Experience: 

Essential requirements are a PhD in an appropriate discipline with at least 10 years post-PhD academic experience including experience in university administration at a senior level.

The applicant must have excellent leadership, interpersonal and managerial skills and should have attained sufficient academic and professional standing to command the respect of the members of the school.  A specialist qualification in Public Health may be considered as an added advantage.

The successful candidate will be appointed as Head for a fixed term of 5 years.  Should the appointee be from outside the University, s/he will be transferred to a continuous academic post at an appropriate level within the appropriate discipline, at the end of the successful term of office.
