The Centre for Infectious Disease Epidemiology (CIDER) is a multidisciplinary infectious disease research centre addressing priority research questions related to HIV and tuberculosis clinical epidemiology and delivery of health services. “B-positive” is an NIH-funded project which seeks to evaluate the impact of local Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) of HIV guideline changes on women and infants, conducted jointly by the Provincial Department of Health and CIDER. The project has helped establish a data centre for patient-level health data to assist both clinical information systems and the provision of broader epidemiological insights and health intelligence to the Department, including related to HIV, TB, maternal and neonatal care. The project will also strengthen routine information systems in support of maternal and neonatal services in an urban jurisdiction, and conduct a cohort study of mother-infant pairs receiving the revised PMTCT intervention.

We seek a highly motivated Medical Specialist in Public Health Medicine who will be responsible for a number of project activities, including taking responsibility for the maternal and neonatal health system strengthening in the Klipfontein-Mitchell’s Plain substructure and the follow-up of HIV-exposed infants.

The appointee will be co-appointed with the Division of Public Health Medicine where s/he will have limited teaching and service responsibilities.

  • Experience with maternal, child and neonatal services, and with routine health information systems in the Western Cape would be advantageous.

Responsibilities:

  • Assisting with the coordination and support of an initiative to strengthen routine data collection and monitoring systems pertaining to maternal and child health in a metro sub-structure.
  • Follow-up of HIV-exposed infants through their routine care, as part of the B-positive study.
