The Sheffield Methods Institute (SMI) delivers a range of interdisciplinary research initiatives and teaching programmes, including the BA Quantitative Social Sciences, as part of the Sheffield Q-Step Centre, and the BA/ BSc Applied Social Sciences. A key purpose of the SMI is also to support the development of the Faculty’s research agenda and play a leading role in developing interdisciplinary, cross-Faculty research bids that focus on methodological issues, encouraging and supporting methodological innovation.

We are seeking a Research Associate to work with the Director of the Sheffield Methods Institute, on a range of inter-disciplinary quantitative social science research projects in the fields of urban segregation and inequality, and urban economics (broadly defined). The role is to help develop a body of research at the interface of economics, sociology, and statistics, with a particular focus on developing novel quantitative approaches to research problems, supporting the ESRC Applied Quantitative Methods Network Research Centre and the Urban Big Data Centre research projects. You will also help us achieve our goal of linking these projects with existing centres of research excellence at Sheffield.

You will have a PhD (or equivalent experience) in a relevant academic field, have evidence of an emerging body of publishable research, and have extensive knowledge and experience of intermediate/advanced statistical modelling and of writing syntax files in appropriate software. You will have experience of teaching quantitative methods, of using advanced quantitative methods, and of using large and complex datasets. You will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, have a flexible approach to working in teams with the ability to work independently, and have effective time management and organisational skills.
