UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN

PROJECT MANAGER – 2 POSTS (3-YEAR CONTRACT) BERTHA CENTRE FOR SOCIAL INNOVATION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP

GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS

About us

  • The Bertha Centre was established 3 years ago as a centre for social innovation within the Graduate School of Business. In addition to contributing a substantial part to the teaching curriculum the Centre focuses its resources on research and practical application in a number of sectors including innovative finance, education, health and social franchising.
  • The Innovative Finance initiative is built around the need to develop an impact focused, social investment market in Sub-Saharan Africa. We take an ecosystem approach to this market building by collating research on Innovative Financing around the world, creating curriculum to educate stakeholders across the public and private spheres and managing projects designed to create social investment and funding opportunities for social investors, foundations, development finance institutions, high net worth individuals, social enterprises and entrepreneurs, NGOs, governments and corporations.
  • Some of our recent milestones include:
  • In March, we announced the first three Social Impact Bonds in the developing world. Read our press release here, a detailed Brookings article on the bonds here and our thought pieces in the PioneersPost & SSIR on our progress.
  • In February, we held our first Executive Education Impact Investing in Africa course at UCT, which had 32 senior financial professionals from 5 countries attend. Prior to the course we publicly released a portion of the curriculum comprised of 14 teaching case studies created in collaboration with the Skoll Centre at Oxford. Read them here: Innovative Finance in Africa cases.
  • In 2015, we held our first Pathways to Funding Do-Ference, which attracted 137 entrepreneurs (of which nearly 50% were from the townships and 40% were women) and over 40 speakers for a dynamic event designed to give entrepreneurs real tools to raise funds and grow their impact enterprises. This year we are holding Do-Ferences in Cape Town, Johannesburg & Durban. We are expecting over 500 entrepreneurs.
  • Some of our other projects include: designing & piloting innovative finance products for green SMEs for the World Bank, researching new Access to Energy finance products for Africa in collaboration with the Wallace Global Foundation, drafting a Social Investment Policy Paper for the South African Government and putting together a National Advisory Board to join the Global Steering Impact Investment Steering Group, working with the South African government to redesign student financing in the country, creating an Outcome Based commissioning course for African policy makers and others.
