LABORATORY TECHNOLOGIST (2 Posts) (Full-time, 12-month contract, Payclass 8)

The Division of Immunology at the University of Cape Town, is seeking suitably qualified persons to fill the position of Laboratory Technologist. There are two laboratory-based positions available for immediate appointment on a 12 month contract.

Requirements:

  • National Diploma in Medical Technology, Bachelor of Technology Degree or Bachelor of Science in medical laboratory sciences in Immunology or a related field.
  • 3 or more years experience in laboratory post qualification, in a range of modern immunological techniques such as the ELISA and ELISpot.
  • Ability to work well in a team.
  • Strong organisational skills, attention to detail and immunology laboratory skills.
  • The ability to prioritise large volumes of work and meet deadlines efficiently.
  • The ability to conduct day-to-day operations of data collection activities in a large research project.
  • Good skills in cell isolation, cell culture, cryopreservation techniques, ELISPOT, and working with lymphoid
  • and mucosal tissue samples.
  • Good decision making and problem solving skills.
  • Computer skills (MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, internet and email).
  • Registration with HPCSA or SACNASP.
  • Should be willing to work late hours (specifically from 4pm-9pm on a weekly rotational basis), including on call and weekends.
  • A valid code 8 driver’s license and own transport essential.
  • The laboratory will be working in a GCLP-like condition and familiarity and training in this area would also be
  • advantageous.
  • Non South-African’s in possession of a valid work permit or exceptional skills permit.

 

The following will be advantageous: Previous experience within an Immunology research environment and flow cytometry experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform specialized laboratory techniques related to clinical studies.
  • Receive, verify and ensure quality of all laboratory specimens.
  • Preparation and processing of samples according to SOPs.
  • Writing laboratory SOP’s.
  • Participating in training of post-graduate students and junior staff in laboratory techniques.
  • Maintain laboratory specimen storage using Freezerworks
  • Management of samples in the biobank.
  • Recording of study data according to study guidelines.
  • Participate in equipment maintenance and standby duty for responding to alarms.
  • Ensure adequate laboratory supplies.
  • Provide and present updated relevant information at meetings.
  • Sample shipment.
