Planning and Project Delivery builds new facilities in support of the University's need for increased research, teaching, residence and administration space. The project managers in this unit engage in complex project management that requires prolonged involvement in program, budget, funding source development, extensive consultant selection, design coordination, estimating, procurement, and construction. 

Reporting to the Director, Project Management Office, the Senior Project Manager works closely with Managers and others from Facilities and Operations (F&O), internal client departments and external organizations. The Senior Project Manager is responsible for assisting the Director, Project Management Office in the planning, leadership and management of construction and renovation projects for University of Alberta (UA) buildings and infrastructure.

 

 Responsibilities:

  • Works with the Planners and other technical personnel, as well as with standing and adhoc committees, to ensure effective communication and articulation of client's requirements, budget, timing, and operating constraints
  • Works effectively within a Studio Model concept by ensuring all appropriate areas of F&O are in key discussions related to project design and approach
  • Provides input and advice to project budgeting processes and scope development reviews to enable project funding and approvals
  • Evaluates external contractors and consultants to ensure UA has access to the best possible resources
  • Develops and maintains expertise in managing and directing external resources as well as internal staff
  • Facilitates discussions and utilizes problem solving to resolve issues in a timely and effective manner
  • Develops and maintains a comprehensive understanding of all policies, guidelines, and procedures regarding ethics, conduct, sustainability, and standards; as well as approval procedures, safety codes and application for permit processes
  • Develops quality assurance processes which will include personal reviews of plans (performance and property specifications) and working drawings to ensure completeness and accuracy
  • Develops new approaches based on analysis, joint problem solving and experimentation
  • Develops staff by ensuring they have ample opportunities to grow and develop in line with their goals
  • Provides leadership and ensures staff are fully engaged

 

 Qualifications:

  • Post secondary education in a related field; equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered
  • 10 years of progressively more responsible management experience that includes experience with numerous challenging and successful projects
  • In-depth knowledge of Mechanical, Electrical, Architectural, and structural building systems as well as knowledge of the legislation and applicable building and related codes
  • Eligibility for membership in a related professional organization such as APEGGA is an asset
  • Requires working knowledge of related codes: Building, Electrical, Fire, Architectural, and ASHRAE is an asset
  • Training and experience related to communications, facilitation, creative problem solving, and/or relationship based conflict resolution and mediation
  • Ability to lead Technical staff and to create a positive and productive work culture
  • Outstanding analytic and conceptual abilities and orientation to creative problem solving based on fully understanding the full depth of a problem
  • Excellent listening and facilitation skills, ability to bring together disparate points of view, outstanding interpersonal skills and ability to move people forward together
  • Ability to present to large and small groups
  • Excellent writing and computer skills
  • Understands all aspects of project management and excels as project management techniques
  • Excellent data and analytic skills (i.e. tracking costs)
  • Estimating skills is an asset
  • Prior Leadership of a technical staff working in a studio shop environment is an asset
  • Project Management experience and training is an asset
  • Prior experience in public sector is desirable 

 

In accordance with the Administrative and Professional Officer agreement, this regular continuing part-time 0.6 FTE position offers a comprehensive benefits package which can be viewed at www.hrs.ualberta.ca. The annual salary range for a full-time 1.0 FTE position is $69,088 to $115,152; the salary for this position will be prorated based on the FTE.
