PhD Studentship: Modelling transitional flow for aerospace engineering

Aerodynamics & Flight Mechanics Group

Location:  Highfield Campus
Closing Date:   Friday 30 June 2017
Reference:  752216AK

Project Reference: AACE-AFM-150

Project Theme: Fluid Dynamics

This project is to develop models and numerical simulation strategy for transitional flow using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for aerospace applications. The numerical methods of particular interests are detached-eddy simulation (DES) which combines the Reynolds-average Navier-Stokes (RANS) method with large-eddy simulation (LES), making it more applicable for high Reynoolds number complex geometry flows. Database obtained from high-fedilty simulations for transitional flow over bluff bodies will be used to further develop turbulence modelling for transitional flow and validating its accuracy. Applicants should have a sound knowledge in fluid dynamics especially turbulent/transitional flow and strong interests in massive parallel computation and numerical modelling. This studentship is provided by Airbus Noise Technology Centre (ANTC) at full EPSRC EU/Home student level.  Students will work within ANTC and closely Airbus.

If you wish to discuss any details of the project informally, please contact Dr Zhiwei HU, Aerodynamics and Flight Mechanics research group, Email: z.hu@soton.ac.uk, Tel: +44 (0) 2380 59 3961.
