Ph.D. Studentship: Healthy Sexual Aging: A mixed-method Study of Sexual Function and Sexual Well-being in Older European Adults

Psychology

Location:  Highfield Campus
Closing Date:   Friday 29 July 2016
Reference:  752516JW

Applications are invited for a Ph.D. studentship to begin in October 2016. The studentship will cover home/EU tuition fees, and a tax-free maintenance grant for 3 years.

The successful application would be based in the Department of Psychology and would be affiliated with the Centre for Sexual Health Research and the broader Centre for Clinical and Community Applications of Health Psychology (CCCAHP).  Supervision will be provided by Professor Cynthia Graham and another member of the CCCAHP.  The CCCAHP is a vibrant and highly research active community and the centre will serve to support and help develop the student’s knowledge and research skills.

The Ph.D. studentship forms part of the research project “Healthy sexual aging: A mixed-method study of sexual function and sexual well-being in older European adults,” funded by the Norwegian Research Council, led by Professor Bente Traeen, University of Oslo, Norway. In this project, the sexual well-being and sexual function of older men and women in Europe will be compared. There will be national, representative cross-sectional surveys carried out in Norway, Denmark, Portugal, and Belgium and a qualitative sub-study, involving in-depth interviews of 25-35 men and women of different sexual orientations in each of the following countries: the UK, Croatia, and Norway.  The findings from the different components will be contextualised to highlight cultural and policy-related differences between European regions, and the results will be used to inform the design of culturally appropriate interventions for the public and a programme for health practitioners working with aging populations.

The Ph.D. student at the University of Southampton will work on the qualitative sub-study in the UK and recruit participants and carry out in-depth interviews on sexual health with older adults (65 years +). The successful candidate will play a key role in analysing the qualitative data, preparing scientific articles for publication, and disseminating results at scientific conferences and project meetings.  They will also gain experience of submitting ethics applications and undergo qualitative interview and analysis training.  The successful candidate will be expected to write a Ph.D. thesis based on the project material.

Applicants would ideally have or be close to obtaining an M.Sc. in Health Psychology or a related discipline, with at least a 2.1 in their first degree.  A high level of motivation and excellent interpersonal and organisational skills are essential.  Prior experience of qualitative research, of interviewing, and of conducting sexual health research, is desirable, but not essential.  Since travel to different locations for interviews will be needed, a UK driving license would also be advantageous.

The deadline for applications is 5 pm. on the 29 July 2016.
