The Role 

Lead an Advanced Computing Group to support world-class research and education in one of the most successful and vibrant universities in the UK, fifth in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework  We are embarking on the delivery of a five-year transformative strategy, in which digital services will play an essential role.  Our Advanced Computing Research Centre has a mission to establish Bristol University as a world class centre for research using advanced computing systems.  You will have state of the art facilities (our latest acquisition is a £3m HPC system which comes on stream in January 2017) and a large team of very experienced and motivated staff to allow you to provide highly valued computer and storage services to over 800 users within the university. You will be expected to be a thought leader in the University, the City-region, the South West, the UK and beyond – participating in relevant fora, special interest groups and communities of practice – for the benefit of the University and its partners.

 

The Candidate 

We are seeking a forward thinking individual who can build effective working relationships with our academic colleagues.  You will work closely with other senior personnel in the University, and with partners and suppliers, to shape a vision for advanced computing and to deliver the systems and services which enable our strategy. To be equal to the challenge, you will need an extensive track record of success in delivering advanced computing services. Direct experience of advanced IT operations and large-scale project delivery is vital. We expect you to demonstrate a proven ability to lead and develop teams within a complex environment. You will also bring to the role substantial leadership experience gained in a sector (not necessarily higher education) that has advanced needs and complicated stakeholder relationships, with up-to-the minute knowledge of all relevant technologies.
