This postdoctoral position is part of the EU Horizon2020 collaborative Project CRESCENDO (Coordinated Research in Earth Systems and Climate).

CRESCENDO brings together seven European Earth system modelling groups to improve the realism and reliability of future Earth system projections. The overarching goals of CRESCENDO are to improve the way that ESMs are evaluated, constrain key biogeochemical and aerosol feedbacks, quantify radiative forcings and generate an ensemble of Earth system projections for the coming century.

The objective of the project at Leeds is to improve the representation of natural aerosols in the UK Earth system model (UKESM), with particular emphasis on processes related to biogenic secondary organic aerosols, fire emissions and impacts, and the processes controlling the properties of aerosols in pristine pre-industrial-like environments. The research will involve developing the key model processes, evaluating the model against satellite and in situ observations, and testing the impact of these natural processes on historical and future climate.

The Leeds research project is led by Professor Ken Carslaw and Professor Dominick Spracklen. You will have the opportunity to work in close collaboration with scientists at the Met Office and across the CRESCENDO consortium.

Requirements

You will have both a PhD (or be close to obtaining) in a relevant area of atmospheric modelling. You will have proven skills in numerical modelling in fortran and data visualisation software. Additionally you will be able to demonstrate commitment to publication of original results at an international level. Experience of using large atmospheric or climate models is desirable.

The University of Leeds’ commitment to women in science has been recognised with a national accolade.
