The University of Sydney is Australias first university and has an outstanding global reputation for academic and research excellence. It employs over 7600 permanent staff, supporting over 60,000 students.

Applications are invited for the appointment of a Postdoctoral Research Associate (Level A, Step 6) in the School of Civil Engineering, Complex Systems Research Group, within the Faculty of Engineering and IT.

The position will support research associated with an Australian Research Council Discovery Project. The project will examine the structure of market-creating innovations and companies changes to routines and resource configurations as they create actions to prove a new hypothesis, rather than to confirm what markets already know. We will test a model of innovation based upon the logic of abduction.

We are seeking a research associate to study the microfoundations of growth in innovating companies. The primary responsibilities of the postdoctoral Research Associate are the quantitative analyses of the growth and resource allocation of companies. The Research Associate will generate models of resource allocation that are based on capital expenditures in business units seeking to test and respond to opportunities. The models will be tested using regression based upon data extracted from the relevant financial data in corporate research databases. The research associate will also assist in the collection and analysis of qualitative data about companies and their strategies such as annual reports and available press in which executives provide their opinions.

The candidate will have a strong quantitative research background, which should include modelling, preferably in the area of the strategic management of innovation, with some experience or understanding of finance and reading financial data. The candidate should have a strong interest in the management of technological innovation, especially studying growth from innovation. The 80 percent FTE appointment encourages the Research Associate to devote 20% time to part-time teaching duties so as to prepare the Research Associate for a future academic career. The initial appointment will be for a period of 1 year with the possibility for a 1-year extension depending upon the performance of the candidate and the availability of funds.
