Job Purpose

The University of Birmingham is continuing to make strategic investments across its research base in the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences. A vacancy has arisen for a Research Fellow in Persistent Organic Pollutants. The post will involve working initially on the WAFER project, before moving onto the ELEVATE project. Both projects are funded by the Environmental Protection Agency of Ireland and involve close collaboration with colleagues at the National University of Ireland at Galway. The WAFER project is evaluating the feasibility of the use of hand-held XRF instruments to screen waste materials for concentrations of regulated brominated flame retardants.

The ELEVATE project will conduct an assessment of human exposure of the Irish population to brominated flame retardants and perfluorooctane sulfonate. It will involve analysis of samples of indoor air, dust, drinking water, and human milk; which will be interpreted alongside existing data on dietary exposure. Applications are invited from candidates with substantial experience in the sampling and analysis of environmental and biological samples for concentrations of halogenated persistent organic chemicals. Experience and expertise with trace environmental analysis using hyphenated chromatographic-mass spectrometric techniques would be a substantial advantage. An appetite and demonstrable capacity for communicating research results via peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations and public outreach activities would be very beneficial.

Person Specification

  • First degree in area of specialism and normally, a higher degree relevant to research area or equivalent qualifications
  • High level analytical capability
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly
  • Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods (i.e. methods for measuring concentrations of POPs using hyphenated chromatographic-mass spectrometric instrumentation) and ability to contribute to developing new ones
  • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
