LECTURER
DEPARTMENT OF INTEGRATIVE BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES
FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES

The Department of Integrative Biomedical Sciences (including the divisions of Medical Biochemistry & Structural Biology, Chemical & Systems Biology, and Computational Biology) is seeking to appoint a lecturer. The Department provides preclinical training, of which Biochemistry is integral in the teaching programs to medical students. The Department has become internationally recognised for its basic and applied research.

Minimum Requirements include:

  • A minimum academic qualification of a PhD degree in Biochemistry, Chemical Biology, Systems Biology, Computational Biology, or related discipline.
  • Postdoctoral experience
  • A good understanding of Biochemistry
  • A track record of publishing research outputs.


Added Advantage

  • Experience in teaching undergraduate Medical Biochemistry or Biochemistry
  • Experience in supervising or co-supervising post-graduate students
  • Experience in securing research funding


Responsibilities include:

Teaching

- Prepare and deliver lectures and tutorials in Biochemistry to under-graduate students

- Prepare and deliver teaching to BMedSc (Hons) students in the fields of Biochemistry, Chemical Biology, Systems Biology or Computational Biology

- Supervise/co-supervise post-graduate and postdoctoral students in the fields of Biochemistry, Chemical Biology, Systems Biology or Computational Biology

- Course administration and participation in undergraduate Curriculum Design Teams

- Teach all aspects of Biochemistry including Proteins and Membranes (Structure/Function), Enzyme Kinetics, Metabolism (Glycolysis, Gluconeogenesis, Oxidative Phosphorylation and Fat Metabolism


Research

- Build an independent research group in a field relevant to the Department

- Conceptualise, lead and execute postgraduate and postdoctoral research projects

- Train postgraduate and postdoctoral students, develop/expand research collaborations both nationally and internationally

- Raise research funding, apply for grants from appropriate national and international funding bodies


Leadership, management and administration

- Strand convenor in the MBCHB Intervention Program

- Perform administrative functions at Divisional, Departmental, Faculty and University level, as needed

- Perform administrative functions related to teaching and research projects


Social responsiveness

- Translate research and findings and teaching practice into the community, for the benefit of the public, where relevant

- Raise awareness of the relevance of research within the context of health and disease.

The annual remuneration package, including benefits, is R558,915
