JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Bergen church art collection

The church art collection (Kirkesamlingen) at the University Museum of Bergen is among the best and most complete in its category in Europe. All objects originate from churches in Western Norway, but the rarity of some of the object types is such that the Bergen collection has a truly European significance. One particular strength is the presence of a variety of altar decorations from the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth centuries: a large number of painted frontals, altar figures of which some are provided with dossals or placed in shrines, painted baldachins and altar retables. For these reasons the Bergen church art collection provides unique opportunities to study the altar and its decorations in Medieval (country) churches. The only comparable museum collections are found in Spanish Catalonia (Barcelona and Vic).
