Job Details

There is a vacancy for a researcher position at the Geophysical Institute within the field of Climate Modelling. The position is linked to the project STERCP: Synchronisation to enhance reliability of climate prediction, funded by H2020-ERC. The employment starts as soon as possible and runs until the end of the project, 31st of August 2020.

Project / work tasks

The simulation and prediction of climate remains a challenge. This project investigates the potential of super climate modelling to improve the simulation of climate, enhance climate prediction and reduce uncertainties in climate change projections. A super climate model is an optimal combination of different models that influence one another as they run. We recently showed the potential of this approach to reduce model errors, through optimally coupling multiple atmospheric models to a single ocean model. The aim of this position will be extend the super model approach to the global domain, through developing methods and software to optimally couple 3D model states. The work will involve the supervision of other researchers in the project in the application and development of the super model approach.

  • The applicant must have completed a doctoral degree in meteorology, oceanography, or other relevant field before expiry of the application deadline.

  • It is a prerequisite that the applicant can document experience in developing and applying super climate models, climate prediction, ensemble Kalman filter data assimilation, atmospheric nudging approaches, tropical climate variability, and use of high-performance computing facilities.

  • Experience with ECEARTH, MPIESM, and NorESM/NorCPM is desired, as is familiarity with the NoTur/NoStore facilities.

  • The applicant must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and to demonstrate good collaborative and supervision skills.
