We are seeking a highly motivated scientist in the field of Nanoscience to work in a multidisciplinary environment at the laboratory for inorganic colloidal nanoparticles and applications (LICNA). LICNA is part of the Quantum, Light and Matter Group (QLM) at the University of Southampton. LICNA’s research, relevant to this post, is focused on the synthesis and functionalization of copper and other nanoparticles with potential antimicrobial properties in order to address multidrug resistance.

You will have a PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications in materials, chemistry, biology or relevant field, experience in nanochemistry/ bionanochemistry and a detailed understanding and knowledge of nanoparticle chemistry (synthesis and functionalization) and the interactions of nanoparticles with cells. You will have excellent communication and organisational skills and proven track record in journal publications and conference presentations including the ability to write up research results for publication in leading peer-reviewed journal.  A willingness and ability to assist with the supervision of postgraduate students and the ability to work independently and a good teamwork attribute.

Experience on small nanoparticles coated with cationic ligands, and knowledge of nanoparticle cellular uptake and skills at microscopy techniques, nanoparticle purification strategies (size exclusion chromatography, gel electrophoresis), and experience working with bacteria and pathogens would be advantageous.

The duration of the project is for six months and has a fixed start date at the beginning of October 2016.
