JOB PURPOSE:

To conduct research, analysis and reporting to the project team to develop low carbon transition plans for city neighbourhoods. 

CityZEN is an EU Framework 7 funded Smart Cities project which aims to develop neighbourhood plans that help the transition to a zero energy world. The project engages with a series of 10 cities all over Europe, through a series of intensive design workshops.

The aim of these workshops is two-fold, firstly to develop an energy strategy plan for the neighbourhood to kick start transition, and secondly to develop and test a methodology and framework that can be used by cities to develop ideas to hasten the adoption of low energy technologies. The role of this post is to support Prof Greg Keeffe with the design workshops, develop energy descent strategies, and to help produce a book of best-practice in low energy neighbourhood design.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Undertake research linked to the development of new methodologies for the design of carbon neutral neighbourhoods.
  • Undertake an analysis of international best practice in neighbourhood design.
  • Undertake a series of design workshops in cities around Europe.
  • Engage with stakeholders to develop energy strategy plans.
  • Support the CityZEN project team on feasibility assessments for potential development projects including: planning searches and scoping work; technical and financial appraisal analysis; and developing concepts for specific design interventions.
  • Write-up results of all research activity and contribute to the production of research reports, publications and proposals.
  • Carry out routine administrative duties as requested, e.g. arranging research group meetings and maintaining social media outputs.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of the project website and keeping it up-to-date with research materials and project publications.
  • Read academic papers, journals and textbooks to keep abreast of developments relevant to the project, and policy documents to keep abreast of relevant policy and design developments. Prepare Strategic development documentation including urban designs, energy mappings, and visualisations.
  • Carry out any other duties designated by a line manager and which fall within the general ambit of the post.


Planning and Organising:

  • Plan own day-to-day activity within the framework of the agreed research programme, paying attention to the need to manage deadlines.
  • Contribute to the planning of research projects, reports and publications etc usually 1-6 months in advance.


Resource Management Responsibilities:

  • Ensure research resources are used in an effective and efficient manner.
  • Provide guidance as required to support staff and any students who may be assisting with research.


Internal and External Relationships:

  • Liaise with the CityZEN team and undertake project specific searches and analysis as directed.
  • Liaise with international colleagues in organising and planning relevant visits to Northern Ireland and internationally.
  • Liaise with research colleagues and support staff on routine matters.
  • Make internal and external contacts to develop knowledge and understanding and form relationships for future collaboration.
  • Attend and contribute to relevant meetings.


ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • Hold or be about to obtain a PhD in relevant subject area such as architecture, energy planning, urban regeneration.
  • A minimum of three years’ relevant experience to include:
- Practical experience of working with stakeholders in a design workshop setting;
- Experience of sustainable urban design – particularly research by design.

  • Experience of administrative tasks relating to research projects.
  • Sufficient breadth or depth of specialist knowledge in planning and development and of research methods and techniques to work within own area.
  • Ability to contribute to method improvement where required.
  • Demonstrable intellectual ability.
  • Ability to analyse and communicate effectively, particularly graphically and in writing.
  • Ability to interact with research colleagues and support staff.
  • Ability to manage deadlines.
  • Must be willing/able to travel freely throughout Europe.


DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

  • Working knowledge of CAD. Working knowledge of Geographic Information System (GIS) software.
  • At least two years’ experience post -graduate design or other research activity.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of energy and community issues including area based regeneration, local energy systems, and energy landscapes.
