Research Fellow - Materials Chemistry x 2

Electrochemistry

Location:  Highfield Campus
Salary:   £28,982 to £35,609
Full Time, Fixed Term - 2 years
Closing Date:   Wednesday 17 August 2016
Interview Date:   To be confirmed
Reference:  759416EB

We are seeking to appoint two researchers in materials chemistry funded by the new EPSRC programme grant ADEPT Advanced Devices. The programme will use electrodeposition to structure semiconductors for device applications including thermoelectrics, phase change memory and IR sensors. The materials chemistry roles will be to produce porous substrates for use as electrodeposition templates, integrate porous materials into microfabricated structures and control the surfaces of the porous materials to provide beneficial interactions with the semiconductors. There are significant opportunities to develop new methods to control pore size, orientation and chemistry. It is also expected that you  will take on a major materials characterisation role within the programme.

The programme is led by Professor PBartlett, and the materials chemistry team is led by Professor A Hector, both in Southampton Chemistry. Further research teams in Chemistry (G. Reid), Physics (D. Smith) and Electronics (K. de Groot) at Southampton and at the Universities of Nottingham (M. George) and Warwick (R. Beanland) will also be highly active members of the programme.

You will have a PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in materials chemistry or closely aligned fields, and strong communications skills with a proven ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team. We are looking to assemble the necessary skills across the two positions. These include materials synthesis, ideally involving templating of porous materials, surface treatments, and characterisation techniques including X-ray diffraction and small angle scattering, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and porosimetry.

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded, the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

Informal enquiries should be directed to Professor Andrew Hector (A.L.Hector@southampton.ac.uk).

These appointments are for 2 years with the possibility of extension subject to further research funding and are available to start immediately.

Application Procedure:

You should submit your completed online application form at www.jobs.soton.ac.uk. The vacancy will close at midnight on the closing date as shown above. If you need any assistance, please contact Sarah Foster on +44 (0) 23 8059 5070. Please quote vacancy reference number 759416EB on all correspondence.
