Research technician: Molecular basis of potato greening to reduce food waste

A research technician position is available for 18 months to investigate the molecular basis of potato greening in order to reduce food waste in the potato industry. In the UK, tuber greening is directly linked to 116,000 tonnes of household potato waste each year with an associated estimated loss of £60m p.a. to UK retailers. This project brings together academic and industrial partners ranging from potato producers and packagers to major retailers such as Tesco and Waitrose who will work together to develop solutions to reduce potato tuber greening.

We are seeking a highly-motivated and enthusiastic individual to investigate the molecular basis of potato greening. The project will involve analysis of pigments by spectrophotometry, use of molecular biology methods including real time PCR and standard plant physiological measurements. Candidates with a background in biological sciences or related disciplines including laboratory-based research project experience will be encouraged to apply. You will need good interpersonal and communication skills as well as the ability to analyse data rigorously.

Informal enquiries can be made to either Dr Haruko Okamoto (h.okamoto@soton.ac.uk) or Professor Matthew J. Terry (mjt@soton.ac.uk).

Application Procedure:

You should submit your completed online application form at www.jobs.soton.ac.uk. The vacancy will close at midnight on the closing date as shown above. If you need any assistance, please contact Sarah Foster on +44 (0) 23 8059 5070. Please quote vacancy reference number 758916BJ on all correspondence.
