Job Purpose

To teach and advise undergraduate, postgraduate or CPD students within own subject area and within an established teaching programme, managed supervised by member of staff with ultimate responsibility for the design, delivery and assessment of the teaching programme.

The successful applicant will be expected to deliver the following teaching:

First Semester:
Research Skills and Methods (MA Course with ~45 students). Involves both on campus and distance learning delivery. Includes marking: each student completes two 2,000-word essays.

Ethics (First year course with ~100 students). Expected to deliver the seminars. Includes marking: each student completes two 1500-word essays.

Second Semester:
Global Ethics (MA Course with ~20 students). Seminar based teaching. Includes marking: each student completes one 4000-word essay.

Global Ethics Placement (MA Course with ~3-5 students). Includes marking: each student completes one 6000-word essay.

Political Philosophy (First year course with ~70 students). Expected to deliver the seminars. Includes marking: each student completes one 1500-word essay and a 90 minute exam.

Over Both Semesters:
The successful applicant will be expected to supervise up to ten final year undergraduate projects (and mark up to double that). Projects total 5,000 words.

Person Specification

  • Higher degree relevant to research or teaching area or equivalent qualifications in Philosophy.
  • Have experience teaching philosophy demonstrating a capability to deliver the range of courses detailed in the role purpose.
  • High level analytical capability.
  • Ability to design and deliver module materials successfully with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to assess and organise resources effectively.
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes.
