Research Fellow - Adding Value and Impact Assessment x 2 posts
NETSCC
Location: Chilworth
Salary: £28,982 to £35,609
Full Time, Permanent
Closing Date: Tuesday 23 August 2016
Interview Date: To be confirmed
Reference: 759916VB
Location: NIHR Evaluation, Trials and Studies Coordinating Centre (NETSCC), University of Southampton, Southampton Science Park, Chilworth
One permanent and one fixed term contract for 12 months
- Are you passionate about scientific research and the way it is funded, managed and conducted?
- Do you want to influence the way the UK's largest funder of applied health research, the NIHR, operates?
- Do you want to make a difference to society through the way research is funded, managed, published and disseminated?
This is an exciting opportunity for you to work in an intellectually challenging area of health research within one of NIHR’s coordinating centres. We are seeking two experienced Research Fellows to join our team and work within the Research on Research programme and in one of two business areas: Adding Value in Research (AViR) and Impact Assessment.
The Research on Research programme, based at NETSCC, undertakes a wide range of research projects, which provide scientific evidence about where improvements can be made to the delivery of the research management functions and processes we are responsible for. It also informs current and future practice in terms of how the research we manage is initiated, conducted and reported.
The successful candidates will be responsible for scoping new research questions with a focus on either impact assessment or AViR, designing and planning projects and independently carrying out the research. A strong component of the work will be to communicate the findings to a number of audiences, including attendance at national and international conferences. Evidence arising from Research on Research is often published in peer-reviewed journals.
The AViR post– The Adding Value in Research approach seeks to maximise the potential impact of NIHR research for patients and the public, and ensure that it answers the right questions, is delivered efficiently and publishes the results in full in an accessible and unbiased report. The postholder will also lead activity at the Wessex Institute to audit against AViR metrics, and collaborate with the wider NIHR to enhance the value that this activity holds for quality improvement. The successful candidate will also play a role in establishing wider collaborative partnerships with other academic institutions.
The Impact Assessment post– Drawing on the published literature, the postholder will also lead the identification of research impact assessment questions. Working with colleagues, the successful candidate will design and deliver research projects to critically assess current activity, and use the evidence generated to further demonstrate the potential impact of NIHRs portfolio of funded research.
You will have a degree in a scientific, medical or health related subject, proven experience of qualitative and/or quantitative research, experience in literature searching and critical appraisal, data analysis and interpretation, track record of peer reviewed publications and/or reporting writing, demonstrate strong communications skills and work as an effective team member.
NETSCC is located within the University of Southampton (http://www.nets.nihr.ac.uk/) and is part of the Wessex Institute within the Faculty of Medicine (http://www.wiep.southampton.ac.uk/about-us/wessex-institute).
The University offers the many benefits of a good employer, such as generous holiday allowance and excellent leisure and arts facilities.
