Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Social Computing

Job Details

Institute for Social Science Research and School of Information Technology & Electrical Engineering

The Institute for Social Science Research (ISSR) is a national leader in advanced interdisciplinary problem oriented social science research and evidence based policy research. Our researchers address some of the most important social issues and challenges facing Australia today. We conduct research on priority issues and offer commercial services and training for public and private sector organisations. In 2013 ISSR won the bid to lead a new Centre of Excellence aimed to break the cycle of social disadvantage across generations within families.

The ARC Centre of Excellence for Children and Families over the Life Course (the Life Course Centre) will advance research targeted at reducing the intergenerational transmission of disadvantage in Australia and internationally. The Centre will tackle the problem of deep and persistent disadvantage which is characterised by the spread of social and economic poverty within families and across generations despite overall improvements in the broader society. The Life Course Centre aims to identify the drivers of disadvantage in Australia and to develop innovative solutions to mitigate or reverse its impact.

The School of Information Technology & Electrical Engineering (ITEE), located on the St Lucia Campus, is a large School that enrols more than 3,000 students each year in more than 200 courses. A quarter of its students are international enrolments. The School has approximately 200 research higher degree candidates. The School has active research programs in the following areas of strength:  biomedical engineering; data & knowledge engineering; E-research; systems & software engineering; power & energy systems; ubiquitous computing; security & surveillance; complex & intelligent systems; microwave & optical communications; cognitive systems engineering; interaction design; robotics; and sleep & respiratory systems engineering.

You will be supported to conduct original research within the general scope of social computing using techniques related to data mining, statistical modelling and machine learning.

The person

Applicants must possess a PhD degree requiring research skills in computer science data management and statistical modelling. Candidates with a demonstrated track record in research with applications to social data will be advantageous. The successful candidate should also have an understanding of data science techniques, including: advanced statistical analysis, nonlinear modelling, high dimensional data analysis (e.g. projection and clustering), machine learning, optimisation, algorithm design, and complexity analysis with some familiarity with web-based system development and programming languages (e.g. JSP, Python, SQL, C/C++, Java, D3, and Matlab) and Linux OS. Ideal candidates will have excellent understanding of issues and challenges underpinning modern data analytics and visualization with a broad knowledge of industry solutions and tools in data management. They will have good skills in programming and software prototyping. In addition a track record of publication of research findings in peer reviewed journals and conferences is also essential as well as experience managing research projects and analysis of social data.
