Medical Specialist Grade 1/Medical Officer Grade 3 (Paediatrics) (HIV OUTREACH AND RESEARCH) COLLEGE OF HEALTH SCIENCES (1-YEAR FIXED-TERM APPOINTMENT, RENEWABLE) SCHOOL OF CLINICAL MEDICINE (PAEDIATRICS; PAEDIATRIC INFECTIOUS DISEASES) Durban REF NO.: T/CM04/2016 The successful incumbent will form part of the Paediatric Infectious Diseases team of doctors, nurses, and field staff based at King Edward VIII hospital.

The discipline seeks to appoint a suitably qualified person for the purpose: o Strengthening the Infectious diseases services at King Edward VIII Hospital and KwaZulu- Natal o Strengthening and supporting the appropriate referral and down-referral of patients requiring advanced Paediatric Infectious Diseases care. The position is available for 1 year, but may be renewable for a further 2-3 years, contingent on satisfactory progress and available funds.

Key Performance Areas: 1. Participation in the provision of service in the Infectious diseases unit at King Edward VIII Hospital particularly outreach to rural hospital and clinics in Area 1 and 3 in KwaZulu-Natal 2. Development of protocols and referral pathways to facilitate out-reach activities 3. Participate in training of staff (Nurses, doctors and ancillary medical staff) in aspects related to paediatric infectious diseases. 4. Participate in provision of after-hours care at King Edward VIII Hospital on a rotational basis 5. Participate in the academic programme, joint meetings with microbiology and virology, quality improvement programmes, clinical audits, peer review meetings, mortality and morbidity meetings 6. Produce and maintain adequate reports of activities conducted Minimum Requirements:

A bachelor’s degree (MBCHB) plus;

Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as an independent medical practitioner or paediatric specialist;

Computer skills;

Driver’s license, willing to travel to clinics and district hospitals Essential Requirements: Knowledge on the management of complex clinical problems in HIV infected patients; Knowledge on the management of opportunistic infections; Knowledge on antiretroviral therapy management, including side effects and the management thereof, and treatment failure;

Good clinical skills and acumen in paediatric cases. ADVANTAGES:

Diploma in HIV Management (SA) or equivalent HIV Diploma is beneficial;

HIV/TB clinical experience;

Experience and working knowledge of current guidelines;

Experience and working knowledge of Good Clinical Practice;

Experience in project management;
