Migrant Life Course and Legal Status Transitions (MiLifeStatus) 

Job description

Professor Maarten Vink has recently been awarded a prestigious Consolidator Grant by the European Research Council for the 5-year project “Migrant Life Course and Legal Status Transitions (MiLifeStatus)”. The objective of this cutting-edge comparative research project is to investigate the relevance of citizenship within the individual life course of an immigrant. When does citizenship provide a boost to migrant integration? The project analyses why, how and for whom legal status transition matters and, especially, how variation in policies between countries impacts on this relation. The research will focus on naturalization trajectories and integration in socioeconomic domains, such as labor market performance, as well as living conditions, health status, out-migration and education among first and second-generation immigrants. The project team will analyze longitudinal data from population registers in the Netherlands and four Scandinavian countries (3 PhD students, 1 post-doc) and, in addition, longitudinal survey data from Germany, Canada and the United States (1 post-doc). The project employs advanced regression techniques such as fixed-effect regression, event history analysis, sequence analysis and latent class analysis. All analyses are conducted in a harmonized manner to enable cross-national comparison. 

The PhD researcher will:

• Analyze longitudinal data from population registers in Denmark, Finland, Norway or Sweden, using advanced regression techniques.

• Write and defend a doctoral dissertation on one these three themes: a) naturalization trajectories and labor market performance (first generation); b) living conditions, health status and out-migration (first generation); and c) education and labor market performance (1.5 and second generation).

• Publish key results in working papers and peer-reviewed journal articles.

• Teach in the BA programme European Studies of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, in courses on research design and quantitative methods, and be involved in BA thesis supervision.

Requirements

We are looking for candidates who:

• Have an MA degree in sociology, economics or political science with demonstrable training in quantitative research skills and an interest in migration research.

• Have experience with conducting micro-level statistical analyses and are willing to learn more about advanced regression techniques such as fixed-effect regression, event history analysis, sequence analysis and/or latent class analysis.

• Have an excellent written and spoken command of English, as demonstrated by previous course work and/or publications in English; having at least passive understanding of one of the Scandinavian languages is an advantage.

• Are team-players and willing to contribute proactively to the development of the MiLifeStatus project.

The candidate will also be part of the Faculty’s Globalisation, Transnationalism and Development research programme. She / he will be part of an international network of top universities and renowned scholars within the field.  

We offer a 4 year full-time appointment as PhD student.
The first year will be a probation period, after a positive assessment the position will be extended with another 3 years.
Your workload will be the normal workload for the position of PhD students. Currently this implies 80% research activities en 20% teaching activities. 

Remuneration will be according to standard salary levels for PhD students starting with a salary of € 2.174,- with a yearly growth to € 2.779- gross a month (based on a full-time appointment.) 

Each year the standard salary is supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.   

You have to be willing to move to (the vicinity of) Maastricht. If you do not already live in Maastricht (or its direct surroundings) you will be eligible for an allowance for moving costs. If you do not already live in Maastricht (or its direct surroundings) you might be eligible for an allowance for alternative housing.  

Other secondary conditions include e.g. a pension scheme and partially paid parental leave.

Department

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is housed in several recently renovated 18th-century buildings in the historic city centre of Maastricht. 

Graduate School

Our Graduate School of Arts and Social Sciences offers the opportunity to pursue a PhD in the interdisciplinary field of arts and social sciences. You receive a coherent program of introductory courses, intensive supervision and frequent discussion with the senior researchers inside and outside the Faculty. The Programme can be characterized by its international and interdisciplinary nature and the emphasis on cultural and societal issues of the modern world.  

The School focuses on four themes:
1. Politics and Culture in Europe.
2. Maastricht University Science, Technology and Society Studies.
3. Globalisation, Transnationalism and Development.
4. Arts, Media and Culture.
