Job Description

Research project

Migrant Life Course and Legal Status Transitions (MiLifeStatus)

Job description

Professor Maarten Vink has recently been awarded a prestigious Consolidator Grant by the European Research Council for the 5-year project “Migrant Life Course and Legal Status Transitions (MiLifeStatus)”. The objective of this cutting-edge comparative research project is to investigate the relevance of citizenship within the individual life course of an immigrant. When does citizenship provide a boost to migrant integration? The project analyses why, how and for whom legal status transition matters and, especially, how variation in policies between countries impacts on this relation. The research will focus on naturalization trajectories and integration in socioeconomic domains, such as labor market performance, as well as living conditions, health status, out-migration and education among first and second-generation immigrants. The project team will analyze longitudinal data from population registers in the Netherlands and four Scandinavian countries (3 PhD students, 1 post-doc) and, in addition, longitudinal survey data from Germany, Canada and the United States (1 post-doc). The project employs advanced regression techniques such as fixed-effect regression, event history analysis, sequence analysis and latent class analysis. All analyses are conducted in a harmonized manner to enable cross-national comparison.

The post-doctoral researcher will:

  • Analyze quantitative data from longitudinal surveys in Germany, Canada and the United States, using advanced regression techniques.

  • Develop visualizations of legal status transition trajectories among first and second-generation immigrants.

  • Publish key results in working papers and peer-reviewed journal articles.

  • Act as daily supervisor for one of the PhDs working on the project.

  • Teach in the BA and MA programmes European Studies and the MA programme Globalization and Development Studies of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

Requirements

We are looking for candidates who:

  • Have a PhD degree in sociology, economics or political science with proven expertise in migration research.

  • Have excellent quantitative research skills and experience with doing micro-level analyses involving advanced regression techniques such as fixed-effect regression, event history analysis, sequence analysis and/or latent class analysis.

  • Preferably have experience conducting research in a cross-national comparative context and/or working with longitudinal datasets.

  • Have a strong publication record in international refereed journals.

  • Have an excellent written and spoken command of English, as demonstrated by publications in English-language journals and presentations at international conferences; having at least passive understanding of German is an advantage.

  • Are team-players and willing to contribute proactively to the development of the MiLifeStatus project.

  • Preferably have teaching experience in migration studies, European studies or globalization and development studies, for example in courses on research design and/or quantitative methodology.

Conditions

We offer a dynamic and challenging job in an internationally-oriented organisation where young people receive an advanced education and scholars conduct exciting research. The post-doc will have the unique opportunity to carry out research within the research theme on Citizenship and Immigrant Integration of the Maastricht Center for Citizenship, Migration and Development (MACIMIDE). The candidate will also be part of the Faculty’s Globalisation, Transnationalism and Development research programme. She / he will be part of an international network of top universities and renowned scholars within the field.

We offer an 1.0 fte appointment as Researcher for 3 years. The first year will be a probation period, after a positive assessment the position will be extended for the remaining two years. Each year the standard salary is supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.
After a positive assessment a promotion to scale 11 is possible in the 2nd year.

You have to be willing to move to (the vicinity of) Maastricht. If you do not already live in Maastricht (or its direct surroundings) you will be eligible for an allowance for moving costs.
