Institute for Social Science Research

The Institute for Social Science Research (ISSR) is a national leader in advanced social science and evidence based policy research. Our researchers address some of today's most important social scientific and policy questions. In addition to research we also provide postgraduate research training and offer commercial services and training for public and private sector organisations. In 2013 ISSR secured funding to lead a new Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence aimed to break the cycle of social disadvantage across generations and within families.

The ARC Centre of Excellence for Children and Families over the Life Course (the Life Course Centre) will advance research targeted at reducing deep and enduring social and economic disadvantage in Australia and internationally. The Centre will examine the intergenerational transmission of inequality and disadvantage and the development, prevention and remediation of disadvantage over the life course. In particular, the Life Course Centre aims to identify the drivers of disadvantage in Australia and develop innovative solutions to mitigate or reverse its impact.

The research group in which this position sits, includes the program of Disadvantage Systems which helps to identify how disadvantage occurs within the Life Course Centre. The research program will investigate how social and economic systems, the community and institutions shape deep and persistent disadvantage and determine how new data systems and technologies can inform this research. The groups also seeks to examine how systems of inequality and disadvantage arise, how they can be addressed and how institutions like schools, families, networks and labour markets are involved with these processes.

The role

The successful appointee for this position will contribute to quantitative research projects examining social and economic mobility and inequality, and an evaluation of state wide population roll-out of the Triple P Positive Parenting System. The work program will comprise 70% duties for the Life Course Centre and 30% working on other research projects in the Institute for Social Science Research at the direction of the Institute Director. The latter may include participation in survey research and other projects, participating in contract research for government, preparing and presenting courses in statistical methods for social research within professional development and graduate training programs. The successful appointee will be required to prepare project outlines, undertake research analysis, and prepare academic papers, reports, working papers and conference submissions. They may also be required to undertake fieldwork, facilitate workshops and participate in meetings with partner organisations in the Life Course Centre. They will also provide leadership in establishing and maintaining research partnerships across the Centre nodes.

The role will be based at The University of Queensland's new Long Pocket precinct (off Meiers Road, Indooroopilly).

The person

Applicants should possess PhD (or close to completion) in relevant field (e.g. sociology, demography, social statistics, economics or a related area with a strong statistical component). You will have research experience across one or more of the following areas: longitudinal data, families, disadvantage, inequality, or education with statistical or econometric methods for longitudinal survey and administrative data. Ideal applicants will have skills or demonstrated potential to undertake research on social or economic mobility and inequality using statistical analysis of longitudinal and cross-sectional survey data.

Remuneration

This is a full-time, fixed term three year appointment at Academic Level A or B (this position may be filled at either Level A or B depending on the qualifications and experience of the applicant as per the Position Description). The remuneration package will be in the range $62,653.88 - $84,985.56 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $73,305 - $99,433 per annum) for Level A and $89,458.97 - $106,232.23 p.a. plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package $104,667.00 - $124,291.71 p.a.) for Level B.
