Housed in the School of Literature, Arts and Media, the Department of Art History is the leading department of its kind in Australia. It includes colleagues in Art History, Film Studies and Museum Studies. The Museum and Heritage Studies Program is a successful and dynamic postgraduate course, committed to educating the next generation of leaders in the heritage and cultural sectors.

To be successful in this Scholarly Teaching Fellow position, you will have tertiary teaching experience and relevant experience related to one or more of the key areas of the University of Sydney’s Museum and Heritage Studies Program, including collections management, heritage theory, history and management, museum and gallery administration, the history of museums and galleries, museum technologies and indigenous heritage.

This position is your opportunity to engage with and contribute to faculty learning and teaching activities and processes and while the role is predominantly focused on teaching, you will have some opportunity to advance a research program.

Under the Fellowship rules you must be able to verify that you:

  • have had fixed term and/or casual employment experience totaling at least 12 months in one or more Australian universities over the preceding five years
  • have been awarded or have submitted a PhD qualification in a relevant area
  • do not hold, or have previously held, any continuing academic appointment in a university.


Other essential selection criteria are:

  • a PhD in the area of heritage, museum studies or a related field
  • an ongoing commitment to developing and advancing pedagogic skills, particularly in the area of eLearning
  • a demonstrated research track record in museum studies with expertise in one or more of the following areas: museum and heritage management, history and theory of museums, and cultural heritage public engagement with museums and heritage
  • evidence of your capacity for efficiency and responsibility in general academic administrative tasks
  • the ability to work in a collegial and effective manner with colleagues within the department and beyond as well as with external partners.
