The Executive Director- Oncology/Hematology Scientific Director has primary responsibility for the direct strategic leadership and management of US region Field scientific engagement to support Merck Immuno-Oncology (I-O) research portfolio including pre-clinical, translational and clinical collaborations; building strategic priorities around Scientific Congress and NCI cooperative groups; supporting clinical operations as scientific consultants for company sponsored research as well as the investigator initiated research (ISP) program. Incumbent will lead, develop and motivate a team of scientific professionals to support the I/O brand portfolio to ensure alignment and integration whilst fostering innovation and high performance. Incumbent will collaborate across MRL to formulate plans that integrate with and support a cross-portfolio strategy.

- Defines strategic direction for Field Scientific Directors (SDs) and ensures alignment with MRL Scientific and Research initiatives including support of Merck I/O research through ongoing interaction with clinical investigators and potential investigators.

- Oversight of all operational activity for the SD team(s) within the region including hiring, field training, evaluation, motivation and disciplinary activities in alignment with the company’s corporate strategies and objectives. Provide strong leadership to motivate SDs to align to a results oriented culture.

- Responsible for initiating, building and fostering internal/external relationships with recognized pre-clinical scientist, clinicians and research experts in Oncology and Hematology. Represents Scientific Affairs leadership while attending external conferences or engaging in scientific exchange, stays abreast of current scientific trends, opinions of company data, and that of competitors while engaging in scientific exchange either personally or at conferences/ investigator meetings.

- Supervise Regional Team Leads and/or SD teams to:

- Monitor the needs of Merck research and effectively structure the work plan of the SD team(s) to meet these objectives.

- Identify potential study sites and increases participation in studies of Merck compounds by increasing investigator awareness of the variety of research opportunities supported directly or indirectly by Merck.

- Discuss relevant scientific issues with investigators that relate to actual or potential clinical research activities.

- Maintain relationships with key scientists and investigators essential to the therapeutic area(s) clinical development program.

- Identify new and emerging science in areas of importance to Merck.

- Facilitate data generation, publication and early dissemination of MISP and Merck-sponsored study results.

- Provide scientific consultation to the Franchise to support scientifically informed and clinically educated decision making. Assure cooperation and alignment with Global initiatives.

- Work closely with MRL, Franchise, OGMA, and Global Directors of Scientific Affairs to ensure successful Merck presence and participation in Professional Society meetings.

- Maintain high level of scientific knowledge within the therapeutic area(s).

Qualifications

Education Requirement:

- Doctoral degree (PhD, PharmD, or MD) is required.

Required:

- Minimum of 10 years in Medical Science Liaison and 5+ years of management experience

- Experience in hematology, oncology and a well-established knowledge of NCCN guidelines, CTEP and Cooperative Group networks is strongly preferred

- Proven track record of success, especially in the areas of strategic thinking, scientific leader engagement, territory planning, and integration with HQ roles.

- Successful record of managing large and complex projects with minimal oversight.

- Exemplary interpersonal communication skills, both oral and written.

- Demonstrated ability to comprehend complex scientific, research and medical issues.

- Ability to travel across assigned area. Estimated travel 40-60%.
