Job Details

Please Note: This is a “rolling advert” with a nominal close date only. Applications are welcome at any time and the timing of the selection process will be dependent on the applications received.

Applications are invited for research engineer / physicist positions available at the Centre for Quantum Photonics (CQP) in the Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering and H.H. Wills Physics Laboratory at the University of Bristol. The role will conduct R&D in quantum enhanced sensing and metrology as part of the £25M EPSRC-funded Quantum Technologies Hub in Quantum Imaging (QuantIC).

CQP is a world leading quantum information research centre pursuing fundamental quantum information science and developing unique and novel quantum technologies pioneering the use of cutting-edge integrated quantum photonics. CQP is a key partner in the QuantIC Hub, part of a £270M investment by the UK government into quantum technologies. In particular, it is focussed on bringing quantum technologies out of the lab and into the real world.

The successful candidate will specialise in quantum enhanced sensing and metrology, working on engineering one or more of: sub-shot noise imaging and spectroscopy systems, quantum LIDAR, sources of quantum light and/or photon counting-and-measurement technologies. Your development of quantum technology will also include working with industry: experience with engineering optical/electronic systems is essential; experience in technology development would also be ideal. You will be working with highly motivated PhD students and experience in mentoring students is therefore also desirable.

The successful applicant will work closely with EPSRC quantum technology fellows Prof John Rarity FRS & Dr Jonathan Matthews and their teams, as well as engaging with all other members of CQP who have experience ranging from photonics device fabrication through to quantum information science theory.

This post is being offered on a full time, open-ended post funded for 2 years in the first instance, with the possibility of extension. CQP is committed to helping researchers become independent academics and have extensive experience in aiding PDRAs with fellowship applications.

Informal enquiries can be made to: Dr Belinda Sharpe, Project Manager; belinda.sharpe@bristol.ac.uk
