Job Details

As one of the largest Geography departments in the UK, the Department of Geography at the University of Sheffield has a vibrant community of undergraduates, postgraduates and postdoctoral researchers. The department enjoys a long-standing international reputation for academic research led by staff who are passionate about exploring and teaching on some of the biggest issues facing the world today. The post holder will join a dynamic Geography department, and play a key role in a challenging new project, Reshaping the Domestic Nexus.

The project will apply a practice theory approach to a range of policy initiatives in the water, energy and food nexus with a focus on consumption practices in UK. The concept of the nexus of water, energy and food (WEF) has had increasing traction in research and policy, confronting the interdependencies of these fundamental resources. Most work in this field focuses on the supply of these resources. This project starts from concern with how demand for these resources and their associated service infrastructures are constituted with a focus on everyday practices happening in domestic kitchens.

The project proposed here will bring a team of researchers across two leading groups in practice research on domestic resource consumption (from Universities of Sheffield and of Manchester) together with 4 policy partner organisations representing the different domains of the nexus (DECC, FSA, Waterwise and DEFRA). This partnership will work to better understand the potential and challenges of effectively articulating practice research insights with policy approaches to effecting change. The post holder will work with the project’s academic team and with representatives of partner organisations to shape their conduct of a critical review and synthesis of existing literature and evidence on domestic practices, on the basis of which to analyse policy documents and design and conduct interviews and workshops with partner organisations, in a process aiming to produce new insights into effecting change in domestic resource consumption.

The post holder will be expected and encouraged to play an active role in presenting conference papers and publishing from the project. You will have a PhD in a social science field relevant for the project, experience of designing, conducting and communicating qualitative social science research projects and a commitment to publishing research in high impact journals, and to presenting at high profile conferences. Familiarity with practice theory and its empirical application is desirable.
