The goal of Merck Oncology is to lead in the discovery, development, and delivery of biologics and small molecules as anti-cancer agents, including defining the "right molecule for the right patient." Under the general direction of the Vice President, Clinical Research, the Distinguished Scientist has overall responsibility to design, interpret, and summarize clinical development strategy, clinical protocols, clinical summaries, regulatory documents, and all other technical functions associated with the clinical research activities conducted for assigned therapeutic areas and compounds. These responsibilities include the development of new products and marketed products.

The Distinguished Scientist will interact with external scientific experts in oncology. She/he will also interact with basic research in target selection, discovery of preclinical candidate molecules, and in the design of early proof of concept studies. She/he will advise Medical Affairs on overall internal research plans and global medical trends, and will work with Global Human Health to ensure development programs meet the needs of patients, physicians, and payors.

The Distinguished Scientist is expected to make major contributions to the Company that are primarily scientific in nature and to provide leadership internally and externally for the field. These may be product specific or involve new techniques for drug development.

Specific Responsibilities include:

- Operating with minimal supervision, designs, oversees implementation, and interprets and summarizes the results of clinical programs designed to lead to new drug applications or to post-marketing study publications.

- Designs or oversees the design of the more complex clinical studies and also supervises other physician monitors and their support staff.

- Oversees the preparation of the clinical sections of investigational New Drug Applications (NDAs) and Marketing Authorization Applications (MAAs). Works closely with Regulatory Affairs to move drugs as quickly as possible through regulatory agencies.

- Evaluates potential licensing candidates.

- May present clinical data to the FDA Advisory Committee.

- Proposes new directions for Clinical Research (e.g., new product claims or research methods).

- Publishes regularly in major journals and participates actively in scientific meetings, including chairing sessions.

- Contributes to Merck's prestige by maintaining recognition as an internationally known expert in her/his field.

- May serve on expert committees outside Merck, on editorial boards, or on planning committees or major scientific meetings.

- By virtue of his/her extensive drug development experience and product knowledge, serves as a source of advice for management and colleagues.

Qualifications

Education:

- MD or PhD required, MD strongly preferred.

- Oncology Board Certified strongly preferred.

Required:

- A recognized expert in the development of oncologic therapies, with outstanding scientific and leadership ability. Experience in biologic oncologic therapies is preferred.

- Experience authoring regulatory documents for cancer therapies is required.

- Demonstration of a record of scientific scholarship and achievement. A solid publication track record is essential.

- Outstanding leadership characteristics exemplified through clarity of goal setting, the ability to inspire others, setting a positive example by providing assistance, recognition and encouragement.

- Strong interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work collaboratively across cultures and functions in a global, matrixed, team environment.

- Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills. Ability to present to diverse audiences and to be the face of Merck’s Clinical Cancer Immuntherapy initiatives externally.

Preferred:

- Experience in a leadership role in industry is preferred.

- A successful product registration is highly desirable.
