FACULTY OF VETERINARY SCIENCE

DEPARTMENT OF COMPANION ANIMAL CLINICAL STUDIES

SENIOR LECTURER / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / PROFESSOR IN VETERINARY DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING (TWO POSTS)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidates will actively participate in the following areas:

  • Didactic and clinical / experiential training of undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary and veterinary nursing students in the Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging Section;
  • Departmental research and publications;
  • Departmental and faculty administrative activities and other duties as delegated by the Head of Department;
  • Clinical service in the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital and surrounding community;
  • Community engagement activities.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Senior Lecturer:

  • A BVSc / BVMCh degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification; PLUS
  • A MMedVet or European / American / Australian Board Certified Specialist Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging or a PhD in a diagnostic imaging field;
  • Acknowledged clinical expertise;
  • Registration as a veterinarian with the SAVC, or eligibility for registration within one year of appointment;
  • Four years’ general Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging experience;
  • At least one research paper as first author and another applicable paper.


Associate Professor (same as for Senior Lecturer, plus):

  • A PhD in Diagnostic Imaging in addition to a specialist diagnostic imaging qualification;
  • Six years’ post-specialisation experience, knowledge of and practical skills in Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging;
  • A significant portfolio of research outputs and evidence of participation in research and discipline forums;
  • Postgraduate supervision up to doctorate level;
  • Teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.


Professor (same as for Associate Professor, plus):

  • Eight years’ post-specialisation experience, knowledge of and practical skills in Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging;
  • International standing as researcher;
  • Expert knowledge of Diagnostic Imaging;
  • Supervision of postgraduate students and postgraduate student management;
  • Working in collaborative research teams;
  • A significant portfolio of research outputs and evidence of participation in international research and discipline forums;
  • A significant track record of original research, including primary and co-authorships of scientific papers, technical reports and policy documents;
  • Previous successful grant applications;
  • Scientific peer reviews;
  • Research student supervision experience.

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

For all levels:

  • Commitment to further academic development;
  • Subject knowledge Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging;
  • Appropriate language and communication skills;
  • Good interpersonal skills;
  • Good computer skills (Windows, MS Office, internet);
  • Good presentation skills;
  • Competence in academic administration.

  • Involvement in professional activities where appropriate.

 

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
