Research Assistant / Senior Research Assistant

Excellent Opportunity for a research assistant / senior research assistant to work in a stimulating and challenging research team environment.

The Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB) is one of Australia's premier biomedical research Institutes and is situated at the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia. It houses 33 research groups in the Divisions of Computational Biology and Genomics, Chemical and Structural Biology, Molecular Cell Biology, and Molecular Genetics and Development. Our emphasis is on quality basic research and its translation into medical and biotechnological outcomes.

The IMB is equipped with state-of-the-art research infrastructure including structural biology (NMR and X-ray), fully equipped chemistry laboratories, mouse and zebrafish facilities, advanced imaging, genome-wide shRNA expression libraries, microarray, advanced bioinformatics, proteomics, and histology. The Queensland Bioscience Precinct (QBP) is a national research and development initiative at the University of Queensland.  The QBP incorporates the Institute for Molecular Bioscience and divisions of CSIRO.

The QBP is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of approximately 650 research scientists and students working in research divisions encompassing genomics and bioinformatics, genetics and developmental biology, cell biology, structural biology and biological chemistry and molecular design.

The role

The applicant will join a team of researchers funded by ARC and NHMRC project grants. The successful appointee will be responsible for purifying peptides, running cell and biophysical assays on peptide drug development projects. The role will include assay development and running of assays and subsequent data analysis. Maintaining an accurate laboratory journal, contribute to meetings and provide experimental data for presentations and reports.

The person

Applicant should have a minimum of a Bachelor with Honours in the field of biochemistry or equivalent and experience in peptide and protein research. Experience with techniques including surface plasmon resonance (SPR), flow cytometry (FACS), confocal microscopy and assay set up thereof, reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC), mass spectrometry (MS) on peptides, and peptide and protein quantification is desirable. The applicant should also have good general research skills, a strong methodological background, statistical and analytic skills, and the capacity to work with multidisciplinary research teams.

Remuneration

This is a full-time, 1 year fixed term (with possible continuation) appointment at HEW Level 5. The remuneration package will be in the range $62,716 - $70,241 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $73,377 - $82,181 p.a.).
