Utilizing a community development approach, the International Student Services (ISS) Student Engagement Programs Coordinator will employ a variety of strategies and processes to ensure that the social, intercultural and outreach programs and events needs of international students are met.

Reporting to the Associate Director, International Student Services, the Student Engagement Programs Coordinator will be responsible for the on-going development and delivery of programs to meet the needs of both international and Canadian students.

Duties

  • Responsible for planning and implementation of co-curricular programs to build student engagement
  • Implements programs to facilitate interaction and learning between Canadian and international students and provides all participants (students and volunteers) the opportunity of enhancing their intercultural competencies
  • Conducts needs assessments and reports program needs
  • Identifies emerging issues in the international student community and leads the development of new programs to respond to these emerging issues
  • Supervises temporary student staff, normally full-time during May to August and part-time the remainder of the year
  • Responsible for all areas of volunteer management including recruitment, screening, training, supervising and recognizing volunteers
  • Determines volunteer needs for all programs, including orientation programs, Bridges: Student Speakers for Global Awareness, UofA: international undergraduate academic success program, and the Peer Program
  • Interviews potential volunteers; determines content of training; facilitates training; assigns tasks or determines volunteers’ suitability; monitors and evaluates volunteers’ performance; provides on-going support and advice, and recognizes volunteers; these programming areas require 200-250 volunteers, with a minimum of 100 volunteers being active at any one time
  • Manages all program aspects to match new international students with peer leaders – Canadian or veteran international students; this includes program promotions, volunteer management training, evaluation and supervise planning and delivery of social and cultural activities, including risk and responsibility management
  • Develops network of short term volunteer placements; identifies appropriate short term placements for individual students and maintain positive relations with community
  • Evaluates and supervises planning and delivery of social and cultural activities, including risk management responsibility for on and off campus events
  • Assists the Associate Director to develop a student engagement work plan to meet strategic goals
  • Contributes to intercultural training programs for students, staff and faculty
  • Prepares budget estimates
  • Performs other related duties as required

Qualifications

  • The ideal candidate will have a University degree (Bachelor of Science Degree in Recreation Management and Programming or a degree that includes coursework in program planning, evaluation, budgeting, and community development preferred); equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered
  • 2 years of related experience; must have a minimum of 2 years progressive experience in programming planning and community engagement
  • Demonstrated knowledge in the following areas: issues facing international students, intercultural communication theory and practices, international education systems and education cultures, and student development; knowledge of inclusive community principles and programming, human resource management principles, program evaluation methods/models, asset mapping, community development principles and models, occupational health & safety regulations, knowledge and experience working with culturally diverse communities and youth utilizing a community youth development approach
  • Program planning, implementation and evaluation skills
  • Communication (verbal and written) skills, particularly intercultural communication
  • Excellent supervisory skills to manage complexity of a large volume and variety of volunteer relationships
  • Human resources skills such as managing, supervising and mentoring volunteers and staff
  • Leadership and group facilitation skills, especially in a training environment and with respect to community development
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
  • Understanding of University of Alberta policies and procedures
  • Computer fluency, including PeopleSoft, Microsoft Office Suite, desktop publishing, Google (Mail, Calendar, Drive) and internet use
  • English language fluency required
  • A second language would be an asset
