1. Organizational Setting
The World Maritime University (WMU) is a postgraduate and research university established in 1983 by the International Maritime Organization, the maritime agency of the United Nations. WMU offers M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs, postgraduate diplomas, and Professional Development Courses with the highest standards in maritime and ocean affairs. The Associate Professor Marine Science position is located in the Faculty unit at WMU’s headquarters in Malmö, Sweden.
2. Main purpose
The position works under the supervision of the Vice President Academic, and functionally under the Head of the MSc. Specialization – Maritime Education and Training. As a faculty member at the World Maritime University, the Associate Professor is expected to provide teaching/mentoring and research and publication in his/her field of expertise. Work involves teaching regularly both introductory and specialty courses, mentoring PhD and M.Sc. students, serving on committees and panels, and providing service to WMU, IMO, and the maritime and oceans community. Duties include engaging in research projects and scholarship leading to the publication of peer-reviewed articles, review articles, and scholarly books, and assisting in the development and execution of research projects and presentation of scholarly results. As a member of the faculty and professional staff at WMU, you will work to keep WMU positioned as an academic institution of excellence and help advance the institution and its reputation.
3. Working relationships
Internal contacts – Incumbent liaises and interacts with all faculty members on a regular basis as well as with support staff as appropriate.
External contacts – Incumbent liaises with the global maritime and ocean community, research organizations, as well as scientific journals and publishing entities.

Teaching/Mentoring

Engagement in the PhD program at WMU Malmö with respect to supervision/mentoring and the progression evaluation process;
Engagement in the MSc teaching program at WMU in Malmö and other locations as needed and assigned;
Contribute to the development and/or delivery of Professional Development Courses (PDCs) as a part of a coordinated approach to assigned teaching duties;
Participate in Distance Education courses as assigned;
Maintain active engagement and remaining up-to-date in area of expertise, including collaborating with industry and professional bodies.

Service on Academic Council, providing service to WMU committees and workgroups, and active participation in administrative, academic, curriculum and international/community outreach duties as required.

Research/Scholarship

Monitor, assess, coordinate, improve and integrate proposals or feasibility studies for research projects.
Conceive and submit project and research proposals as a member of the Maritime Education & Training, Human and Organizational Development (METHOD) research group
Servicing intergovernmental meetings, negotiations or expert group meetings of a technical nature or presenting, describing and defending the work of the organizational unit at meetings and at external scientific seminars and other gatherings.
May conduct training seminars and briefings of national experts for the transfer of results and methodologies elaborated in research activities.

PhD in maritime education or affairs, with preferred experience in maritime education and training, e-learning, maritime governance and organizational behaviour in that context, and/or the human element in the maritime sector.
Experience Essential

Minimum of 5 years experience in teaching at the postgraduate level, preferably within the Maritime Education and Training field.
A track record in research and scholarly publication in the maritime education field,
Professional experience in the maritime transport sector and/or seafaring experience preferably at a management level,
Experience in developing maritime education curriculum, appropriate assessment techniques, supervision of PhD and MSc students and their dissertations, and ability to use a range of delivery techniques.
Experience in assisting in project management in relation to teaching programs, research projects, and capacity building programs for developing countries.
Desirable

Experience in planning, organizing and teaching Maritime English.
Experience in planning and organizing field studies for students.
Experience in organizing conferences and seminars and fund-raising.
Languages Essential

Fluency in spoken and written English.
