Description
Merck & Co., Inc. Kenilworth, N.J., U.S.A. known as Merck in the United States and Canada, is a global health care leader with a diversified portfolio of prescription medicines, vaccines and animal health products. Today, we are building a new kind of healthcare company – one that is ready to help create a healthier future for all of us.
Our ability to excel depends on the integrity, knowledge, imagination, skill, diversity and teamwork of an individual like you. To this end, we strive to create an environment of mutual respect, encouragement and teamwork. As part of our global team, you’ll have the opportunity to collaborate with talented and dedicated colleagues while developing and expanding your career.
As a postdoctoral fellow in the Neuroscience Early Discovery Unit (Boston), you will be one of five postdoctoral fellows working on a variety of aspects of Tau protein biology in different departments and locations across Merck’s network and with collaborators in the local Boston biomedical research community.
You will work with a diverse group of experts in biology, pharmacology, genetics, proteomics and other drug discovery disciplines. Your project will focus on the function of extracellular Tau. Extracellular Tau has been implicated in “prion-like” spread of Tau pathology between neurons in Alzheimer’s Disease, but the normal functions of physiological extracellular Tau and the impact of pathological extracellular Tau on neurons are not understood. You will be responsible for conceiving, designing, planning and implementing experiments to understand the function of extracellular Tau under normal and diseased conditions. You will also have the opportunity to see how a deep understanding of biology contributes to the drug discovery process.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Lead the development and implementation of experiments to determine the function of extracellular Tau under normal and diseased conditions
- Analyze and communicate data in a timely manner to mentor and collaborators
- Present your research at internal and external scientific meeting
Qualifications
Education:
- PhD in Neuroscience, Cell Biology or related discipline with 3 years or less postdoctoral experience or met all the requirements for a PhD by May 2016 in Neuroscience, Cell Biology or related discipline
Required:
- Ability to design experiments, interpret and track results, and utilize this information to test hypotheses
- Experience in cell biology, biochemistry and molecular biology
- Experience with primary neuronal cultures
- Knowledge of neuroscience and neurodegenerative diseases
Preferred:
- Experience culturing induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) derived neuron cultures
- Experience in electrophysiology: dissociated cell and slice cultures
- Demonstrated experience in cross lab collaborations
- Strong track record of publication in peer-reviewed journals
