Research Associate: Rheumatoid Arthritis Pathogenesis Centre of Excellence

Job Purpose

To assist in research to create knowledge through providing research support for projects and research groups in the new Arthritis Research UK (ARUK) Rheumatoid Arthritis Pathogenesis Centre of Excellence (RACE). This Centre is collaboration between Glasgow, Birmingham and Newcastle Universities to undertake research, provide training and build capacity and skills in the understanding of the pathogenesis of Rheumatoid Arthritis.

In particular the potholder will be the main source of technical expertise for the following techniques that will be standardized across all three Universities in the RACE Centre of Excellence

• • Cell sorting and confocal imaging
• • Cell culture and sample preparation
• • Immuno-staining of cells for flow cytometry using a variety of fluorescent markers.
• • Basic molecular biology (PCR)
• • Basic protein analysis (western blot analysis, ELISA)

Person Specification

• • Practical experience of applying the relevant skills and techniques
• • Ability to analyse information and communicate effectively
• • An undergraduate degree in a Biological Sciences subject or equivalent experience
• • Ability to access and organise resources successfully
• • A sound knowledge of immunology and basic molecular biology.
• • In depth technical knowledge of FACS cell sorting and experience of running and managing a cell sorted facility.
• • Experience of working in a highly active research laboratory undertaking experimental projects for publication
• • Experience in managing a FACS facility including supervision of technical staff, requisitioning of laboratory consumables and disposal of all the laboratory waste including radioactive and clinical.
• • An in depth knowledge of Health and Safety legislation pertinent to molecular and cell biology research work including preparation of COSHH/Risk assessments related to FACS analysis
