JOB PURPOSE:

The position will be assigned to the research team led by Professor Liam Heaney and Dr Lorcan McGarvey within the Centre for
Experimental Medicine and Belfast Health and Social Care Trust. As part of the Medical Research Council Refractory Asthma
Stratification Programme (RASP-UK), the successful applicant will undertake primary clinical research including phenotyping and
investigation of stratified severe asthma cohorts with a focus on non-steroid responsive mechanisms with the express purpose of obtaining a PhD.

 

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • To undertake and be responsible for the progress of a study to investigate the role of non-steroid responsive mechanisms in stratified clinical cohorts in severe asthma within the Medical Research Council Refractory Asthma Stratification Programme (RASP-UK).
  • To undertake training in early phase clinical trials.
  • To undertake training in early phase clinical trials.
  • To undertake the ethical and research governance procedures in relation to clinical trials.
  • To gain experience in clinical care in severe asthma in a research context.
  • To assist with the recruitment of participants for this study.
  • To undertake a higher specialist research degree (PhD).
  • Carry out analyses, critical evaluations, and interpretations using methodologies and other techniques appropriate to area of research.
  • Present regular progress reports on research to members of the research group or to external audiences to disseminate and publicise research findings.
  • Prepare, often in consultation with supervisor, material for publication in national and international journals and presentations at international conferences.
  • Assist grant holder in the preparation of funding proposals and applications to external bodies.
  • Carry out routine administrative tasks associated with the research project/s to ensure that project/s are completed on time and within budget.
  • These might include organisation of project meetings and documentation, financial control, risk assessment of research activities.
  • Read academic papers, journals and textbooks to keep abreast of developments in own specialism and related disciplines.

 

Planning and Organising:

  • Plan for the use of research resources, laboratories and workshops where appropriate.
  • Plan own day-to day activity within framework of the agreed research programme.
  • Plan up to a year in advance to meet deadlines for journal publications and to prepare presentations and papers for conferences.
  • Coordinate and liaise with other members of the research group over work progress.

 

Resource Management Responsibilities:

  • Ensure research resources are used in an effective and efficient manner.
  • Provide guidance as required to support staff and any students who may be assisting with research.

 

 

 

 

 

Internal and External Relationships:

 

  • Liaise on a regular basis with colleagues and students.
  • Build internal contacts and participate in internal networks for the exchange of information and to form relationships for future collaboration.
  • Join external networks to share information and ideas.
  • Contribute to the School’s outreach programme by establishing links with local community groups, industries etc.
  • Medically qualified with GMC registration by the time of commencement in the post.
  • In specialist training programme in Respiratory Medicine compatible with GMC registration.
  • Evidence of having been involved with and has an interest in research commensurate with level of training.
  • Excellent organisational skills.
  • Must display clarity of thinking and ability to address a variety of research topics.
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly.
  • Ability to build contacts and participate in internal and external networks.
  • Demonstrable intellectual ability.
  • Ability to assess and organise resources.

 

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • Ability to work independently and on own initiative.
  • Must be willing to travel to national and international meetings.
  • Appointment to this post is subject to the successful candidate’s Enhanced Criminal Record Check.
  • Must meet the eligibility criteria for enrolment onto the desired PhD course of study.
  • Ability to work outside normal hours when necessary.

  • Evidence of high performance at Medical School.
  • Evidence of previous research.
  • Evidence of abstract publications.
  • Ability to contribute to broader management and administrative processes.
  • Contribute to the School’s outreach programme by links with industry, community groups etc.
  • Evidence of having presented at conferences (poster and/or oral).

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The position will be assigned to the research team led by Professor Liam Heaney and Dr Lorcan McGarvey within the Centre for Experimental Medicine and Belfast Health and Social Care Trust. The successful applicant must be medically qualified with full GMC registration at the time of taking up the post.
