Job Details

You will work as a  Research Fellow with Dr Gill Main (Principal Investigator) on her ESRC Future Research Leaders-funded project, ‘Fair Shares and Families: Children’s perceptions of material resource distributions and decision making in families’. The position is based in the School of Education at the University of Leeds. The project explores the links between child poverty and children’s subjective well-being, through a focus on how children and families from across the socio-economic spectrum perceive, and make decisions about, sharing resources.  The research employs a mixed methods design, incorporating a six-month ethnographic strand and three waves of a quantitative survey.  You will be responsible for helping to design and for conducting the six-month ethnography with families in Leeds, involving supporting recruitment, intensive fieldwork, transcription of data, and contributions to analysis and the development of publications.

You will hold or be working towards a relevant doctorate in the social sciences (or have equivalent research experience), and will have experience of conducting research with children and families.  Experience of in-depth qualitative research is essential, and experience of ethnographic research would be a strong advantage.  You will work with Dr Main, project partners at The Children’s Society and Leeds City Council Children’s Services, and the international advisory board for this research.

You will be supported to collaborate on publications, and will be provided with training in research methods relevant to your experience and the requirements of the project.  You will have a sound grasp of childhood studies and qualitative research methods; excellent analytical, fieldwork and writing skills; and skills in qualitative analysis.  The ability to work alone or as part of a team are essential, along with strong organisational skills and the ability to deal with a variety of tasks to set deadlines.  The post will involve travel within Leeds and occasional overnight stays in London to work with project partners at The Children’s Society.  Due to the ethnographic nature of the research, the post will involve a great deal of evening and weekend working to fit around the schedules of participating families.

A Criminal Record Check is required for this position.

Informal enquiries may be made to Gill Main, tel +44 (0)113 343 0237, email g.main@leeds.ac.uk
