Job Details
One of our excited research team is seeking a self-motivated and career-oriented candidate for a:
- PhD Position in Helminth Drug Discovery
We are offering a PhD position open for a dedicated scientist to work on drug discovery for the neglected tropical disease schistosomiasis. The position is in the laboratory of Jennifer Keiser at the Helminth Drug Development Unit.
Schistosomiasis causes a significant public health burden yet treatment options are limited. Our research aims to discover and develop novel anthelminthic drugs.
This PhD project will focus on developing and testing (in collaboration with the Bio Engineering Laboratory at the ETH Zurich) a microfluidic electric impedance spectroscopy chip platform for antischistosomal drug discovery. The device will allow, for the first time, to measure continuous, online drug dose-response effects on the larval stage of the worms, rendering the screening process higher throughput, more objective, and richer in quality data. The chip will incorporate spherical myocardial and liver microtissues, which will capture relevant toxicity parameters and allow to model drug metabolism. In addition, we aim to characterize the pharmacokinetics of a structural polymorph of praziquantel using LC/MS-MS.
The successful candidate should hold a MSc (university) degree in biology or pharmacy. The proposed projects include parasitological and analytical studies.
Employment will be according to standard regulations of the Swiss National Science Foundation.
A tentative starting date is September 1st but this is flexible.
Please note that we can not accept applications via mail or e-mail.
