DEPARTMENT OF GEOGRAPHY, GEOINFORMATICS AND METEOROLOGY

SENIOR LECTURER

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbent will be required to:

  • Present undergraduate and honours level lectures and practicals in the area of Geoinformatics with a focus on geographic data, GIS, GIS design and implementations, and spatial analysis;
  • Develop and update curricula in Geoinformatics;
  • Contribute to the Geoinformatics research agenda within the University;
  • Build the capacity among staff and students to expand and extend UP's capacity for Geoinformatics research;
  • Establish a sustainable research funding stream to support this endeavour;
  • Conduct independent and collaborative publishable research in high-impact journals;
  • Establish collaboration with academics nationally and internationally;
  • Participate in the administration and general management of the Department.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A PhD-degree in Geography or Geoinformatics, or a PhD in a closely related discipline with an appropriate qualification that includes geographic data, GIS, GIS design and implementations, and spatial analysis;
  • Experience in teaching, development of learning materials and assessment techniques at undergraduate and postgraduate level;
  • Registered or qualify for registration as Professional GISc Practitioner with the South African Geomatics Council;
  • The applicant must have a proven publication record that demonstrates his/her ability to independently conduct quality Geoinformatics research that attests to on-going engagement in the field.

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • The applicant must demonstrate innovative thinking, a desire to develop and the potential to lead a strong research entity;
  • Proven experience in supervising postgraduate students;
  • Proven teamwork, interpersonal and leadership skills;
  • Proven record of good language and communication skills, both written and verbal.

 

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • NRF-rated, or be able to attain an NRF rating within the following three years;
  • Post-doctoral experience will be an advantage;
  • Proven experience in supervising postgraduate students to completion;
  • Proven experience in fundraising for academic research.

 

The total remuneration package for this position ranges from approximately R 471 344 to R 605 898 as determined by UP policy guidelines. (These amounts include the University’s contributions to standard UP benefits, namely provident fund, group life and funeral cover, but exclude contributions to medical aid, as the latter varies per employee.) UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
