Two Tenure Track Faculty Positions

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Washington State University in Pullman, WA announces openings for two full-time tenure-track faculty positions, one each in structural and geotechnical engineering, to advance an interdisciplinary research and education theme on Sustainable and Resilient Structural Systems. This theme focuses on emerging approaches to the design, construction, retrofit, and preservation of structural systems and their interactions with the environment. These coordinated hires are designed to support our departmental strategic plan addressing needs of the built and natural environments in the context of global change. Candidates with evidence of strong multidisciplinary interests will have the opportunity to join like-minded faculty in the new PACCAR Environmental Technologies Building. A culture of collaborative research with a diverse group of faculty and students is valued. Successful candidates will be expected to provide strong teaching and mentorship to a diverse student body, teaching classes in the areas of respective expertise. The positions described below are anticipated to be filled at the Assistant of Associate Professor level.

1. Structural Engineering (https://www.wsujobs.com/postings/26854): Applicants should have a core strength in the behavior, analysis, and design of structures, with the ability to conduct multidisciplinary research in areas that include low- to mid-rise buildings and transportation structures, with specialties in sustainable structures; multi-hazard mitigation; hybrid structural systems; retrofit, rehabilitation, and preservation of buildings and infrastructure; earthquake engineering and structural dynamics and control; and/or design for efficient construction and deconstruction.

2. Geotechnical Engineering (https://www.wsujobs.com/postings/26855): Applicants should have a core strength in any specialty area(s) of geotechnical engineering.  Preference will be given to candidates with specialization in geotechnical technology towards mitigation of the effects of natural hazards, such as earthquakes, landslides, flooding, underground structural monitoring, and/or energy harvesting.

The successful candidates will be expected to complement existing research strengths within the Composite Materials and Engineering Center, Institue for Sustainable Design, Washington State Transportation Research Center (TRAC), Washington Center for Asphalt Technology (WCAT), Geotechnical Laboratory, Smart Structures Laboratory, and/or the High-Resolution X-ray Computed Tomography Laboratory.

Candidates must have an earned doctorate degree in civil engineering or closely related field by the date of hire; specialization in structural engineering or geotechnical engineering; excellent communication skills; and a demonstrated commitment to collaborate with the diverse internal and external groups. Candidates for Associate Professor must have strong records of scholarship, teaching, and professional servie commensurate with that rank. Exceptional candidates will have the opportunity to be appointed at the Coughlin Distinguished Professor in the Structural Engineering or the Colf Distinguished Professor in the Geotechnical Engineering. Candidates are preferred to be licensed or be positioned to obtain their professional engineering license within four years.
