The primary objective of Discovery Pharmaceutical Sciences (DPS) at Merck is to work on multi-disciplinary teams to identify and successfully transition quality compounds from discovery to development. To effectively achieve this goal DPS works collaboratively to a) develop enabling preclinical formulations for pharmacology and toxicology studies, b) build key structure-property relationships across multiple drug modalities to identify optimal candidates for development, and c) deliver key data sets for development candidate evaluation.

The Director is responsible to lead these described activities to progress compounds through all phases of discovery and their transition to development leveraging expertise in pharmaceutical science. The Director should have a passion and vision for engaging drug delivery technologies as well as a track record of driving results and rapidly progressing from idea conception to in-vitro & in-vivo testing. To this end the candidate must excel in leading the conduct of scientific research and working in collaboration with CMC development functions (preformulation, chemistry, formulation, analytical, and biopharmaceutics research) in order to translate research to clinical formulation development and ultimately products.

Further, the candidate is responsible for innovative approaches to maintain and enhance a world-class pharmaceutical sciences group at the discovery / development interface. Critical tasks involve oversight and allocation of resources necessary to evaluate molecule fit with desired product profiles across different therapeutic areas as well as intense interaction with discovery function leaders.

The position reports to the Executive Director of Discovery Pharmaceutical Sciences (DPS) and will supervise staff in Kenilworth and Rahway New Jersey with must be flexible for possible travel & oversight of other sites in the future. The Director and is responsible for identifying and hiring talent, training and people development, and general management of the group. The candidate will effectively collaborate with the Discovery Pharmaceutical Sciences leadership team and extended leadership teams in order to identify and advance key departmental strategic and cultural initiatives. The Director will guide the preparation of publications and disclosures prepared within their group.

Qualifications

Education:

- Ph.D. in pharmaceutical science, chemistry, or related science is preferred OR MS in pharmaceutical science, chemistry, or related science with required industrial experience

Required:

- A minimum of 8 years of industrial drug product/ drug substance development or industrial drug discovery experience.

- Demonstrated ability in leading a research team.

- Successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills.

- Strength in delivering results on firm deadlines in support of discovery/development programs.
