JOB PURPOSE:

To provide specialist technical services to support teaching activities and general laboratory duties. Also to assist with managing safety regulations in the School of Pharmacy.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Provide technical advice and guidance to students in the use and construction of equipment and apparatus.
  • Provide detailed information and guidance to students in laboratory/ experiments as appropriate.
  • Contribute to the development, construction and modification of components/apparatus using full range of techniques for teaching/research/project work purposes.
  • Set up specialised equipment and apparatus for use by academics and students in practical experiments.
  • Prepare for tests/experiments, e.g. the preparation of special materials, compounds and solutions, producing test specimens based on research requirements.
  • Maintain, test, fault finding and repair equipment/apparatus to ensure it is safe to use and complies with relevant statutory safety
  • regulations. Ensure general laboratory services tidiness.
  • Responsible for maintaining stock levels, to ensure there is adequate stock at all times.
  • Comply with Health and Safety procedures affecting self and others.
  • Collecting and disposal of waste in accordance with institution’s policies.
  • Carry out any other duties which are appropriate to the post as may be reasonably requested by Supervisor.


Planning and Organising:

  • Prioritise own work within a general plan to meet deadlines.
  • Plan layout of the laboratory/workshop as well as assessing requirements and resources needed in advance.


Resource Management Responsibilities:

  • Where appropriate carry out some training of junior staff. Take delegated responsibility for the maintenance and repair of scientific equipment.
  • Allocate/delegate some work to others for specific activities.
  • Support student learning through the development and demonstration of standard equipment and techniques.

 

 


Internal and External Relationships:

  • Daily contact with Supervisor, work colleagues, University staff and students.
  • Some liaison with external consultants.


ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • Academic and/or vocational qualifications ie OND/ONC and/or NVQ level3 in relevant subject (or equivalent). 3 years relevant work experience to include:
  • At least 2 years supervising in a microbiological/molecular biological laboratory
  • Maintain tissue culture facility, provide autoclaving service
  • Conducting and recording health and safety assessments.
  • Mangement of a Laboratory to include security.
  • Handling/storage of liquid nitrogen and bottled gases.
  • Liaison with commercial companies for pricing and sourcing of materials
  • Experience in stock control and requisitioning.
  • Specialist skills and knowledge relevant to the job.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of relevant systems, equipment and processes. Provide health and safety guidance and advice to students and staff.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to develop and demonstrate standard equipment and techniques.
  • Ability to prioritise own work within a general plan to meet deadlines.
  • Well developed understanding of relevant regulations and procedures including Health and Safety requirements.
  • Ability to manage busy and varied workload and prioritise conflicting demands.
  • Analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team with the aptitude to motivate other staff.
  • Occasional work outside normal working hours.


DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

  • Liaison with commercial companies for pricing and sourcing of materials.
  • Fire safety experience.
  • Management of Inventory.
  • Buildings/fixtures fault reporting.
  • Organise and conduct safety training.
