The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry is seeking a Director, Translational Science institute (TSI), Operations to work jointly with the Translational Science Institutes (TSIs): Cancer Research Institute of Northern Alberta (CRINA) and the Neuroscience and Mental Health Institute (NMHI) to provide administrative support as described below. This position will work independently under and with direction from the acting Directors of CRINA and NMHI, and will perform a diverse array of duties that will include TSI-related contractual and transactional reporting responsibilities.

The TSIs play a critical role in increasing the University’s competitiveness for external research funding in the areas of cancer and neuroscience & mental health. The TSIs also foster translational research and skills training that improve alignment of the Faculty’s research assets with highly qualified faculty and personnel.

This position requires a high-functioning, proactive, personally motivated individual with scientific and administrative experience.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develops, stewards and brokers a comprehensive array of expertise and services available to TSI researchers to support highly competitive translational science, particularly in the area of preclinical translation (e.g. regulatory expertise, screening and optimization services, GLP/GMP facilities, etc.)
  • Develops and delivers workshops for investigators and trainees regarding key aspects of preclinical translation (e.g. IP protection, Health Canada and FDA regulatory processes, etc.)
  • Connects TSI researchers with funding portfolios and expertise designed to support ‘proof of concept’ studies and commercialization activities
  • Manages the day to day operations independently based on direction received from the co-directors of the Institutes, that will include all aspects of support staff supervision, financial and operational responsibilities
  • Responsible for project implementation and management
  • Monitors national and international resources for funding opportunities relevant to CRINA and NMHI
  • Works with lead investigators to prepare and write grant applications
  • Plans, organizes and implements visiting speaker seminars, research days, retreats and town hall meetings for the Institutes
  • Works with the Scientific Management Committees of CRINA and NMHI to identify linkages and potential collaborations
  • Works with TSI leads to inform budget plans and manage operating expenditures in order to meet organizational sustainability objectives and terms associated with the Faculty’s financial investment
  • Works with Institute leadership to develop and complete reports showing successful leveraging activities of the TSI’s such as annual reports


Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a related field supplemented with administrative/project management experience; PhD preferred
  • MBA with a science/research background is an asset
  • A broad understanding of biomedical translational sciences
  • Relevant business administration certificate(s) or comparable executive training or experience
  • 1-2 years of research administration experience
  • Working knowledge of basic biomedical, pre-clinical and clinical research
  • Experience with industry research
  • Direct involvement and experience in preparing major research proposals is an asset
  • Significant scientific and network project management experience is an asset
  • Ability to plan and coordinate multiple projects and operations simultaneously involving diverse priorities and stakeholders
  • Ability to coordinate work activities with other departments/units within the University and with external agencies and organizations
  • Ability to work effectively on a team and also be self-motivated
  • Experience making independent judgments within the context of established policies and procedures
  • Excellent internal and external “customer service” skills with the ability to work across the University at all levels of personnel (from students, to staff, to investigators, to administrators) as well as with potential funders, sponsors, contract vendors, research entities and the public at large including patient representatives
  • Organized, detail-oriented, task-driven, and thorough in tracking and documenting progress toward goals
  • High professional standards in all aspects of work, with sensitivity to handling confidential information
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Website management experience would be an asset
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills 
  • Strong research budgeting skills 
  • Excellent leadership/teambuilding skills 
  • Working knowledge of academic research administration policies and issues 


In accordance with the Sessional and Other Temporary Staff agreement, this position has an initial appointment of three years, with the possibility of extension, and offers a comprehensive benefits plan found at www.hrs.ualberta.ca and an annual salary range of $60,484 to $100,842. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
