Job Purpose

To create and contribute to the creation of knowledge by undertaking a specified range of activities within the Leverhulme Trust Research Project Grant ‘Inner and Outer Exile in Fascist Germany and Spain: A Comparative Study’.

The Research Fellow will conduct archival and library research to help compile a translated anthology of writings by German inner and territorial exiles, comprising short prose works, poems and extracts from longer works. Besides translating the chosen texts into English, they will provide a critical apparatus, including textual notes, information on the genesis and, where applicable, reception of individual works, and biographical data. The post holder will collaborate on a common critical introduction to the jointly edited two-volume anthology, including a sketch of the censorship framework in Nazi Germany and the way censorship shaped and influenced literary activity in the two settings

Person Specification

  • • Competence in English and a knowledge of German (C2)
  • • First degree in area of specialism, most likely in German Studies
  • • They will hold a PhD in an area related to German Literature or must at least have completed such PhD studies by 31 December 2016
  • • Competence in and preferably also some professional experience of German to English translation
  • • High level analytical capability
  • • Ability to communicate complex information clearly
  • • Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones
  • • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
  • • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
