The School of Chemical Engineering

The School of Chemical Engineering is an international leader in the chemical engineering field and has an excellent international reputation which has been built over four decades at the University. With 35 academic staff, including 17 professors, the School provides quality programs and leadership in chemical engineering education, research and development, and expert consulting to support the process industries. The School conducts undergraduate teaching in the disciplines of chemical, biological, environmental and metallurgical engineering and teaches into postgraduate programs in growing fields including integrated water management and energy studies. The School's project centered curriculum was recently chosen in a RAE & MIT study as one of six global exemplars in leading engineering education. UQ Chemical Engineering was ranked in the top 16 worldwide in the 2012 QS subject rankings for chemical engineering and was the top ranking school in Australia. It was also given the highest score awarded for chemical engineering in Australia in the recent ERA study.

The role

The successful applicant will undertake experimental research in coal seam gas (CSG) production, with a particular emphasis on understanding low permeability coals and developing technologies for overcoming permeability problems to improve gas production. The position will have a broad remit including responsibilities to provide general assistance to senior academic staff for the execution of the projects, for care and use of advanced analytical instrumentation, developing and participating in grant applications and executing (in association with others) research projects, and supervision of student research projects.

The appointee will, in close collaboration with the research team, undertake research work directed along the above lines. Other duties include co-supervising undergraduate and postgraduate research students, publishing papers, applying for research grants and such other duties assigned by the Chief Investigators. The research associate may have the opportunity to take on teaching opportunities within the School if desired.

The person

Applicants should possess a PhD in a suitable branch of Chemical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering or other related discipline. A strong record of publications in leading journals commensurate with opportunity and experience is essential. Experience in laboratory research with core flooding methods and high pressure gas experiments related to the coal seam gas and unconventional gas sector is essential.

Remuneration

This is a full-time fixed term appointment at Research Academic level A. The remuneration package will be between $79,170.68 - $84,985.56p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17%.

*Flexible and part-time work arrangements will be considered.
