About UON

Built on the principles of equity, excellence and engagement, the University of Newcastle (UON) has a reputation as a world-class institution making an impact within our regions, throughout Australia and across the globe. At just 50 years of age, we are already ranked among the top 3% of universities world-wide and our passion for innovation and discovery will ensure our performance and reputation continues to rise. Being part of a university on the move gives our people the opportunity to really make a mark in their chosen field.

About the role

Positioned within the Priority Research Centre for Frontier Energy Technologies and Utilisation (PRC-FETU), School of Engineering with a discipline of Chemical Engineering, the successful applicant will be expected to align his/her research activities with those of the PRC-FETU and to collaborate in appropriate existing PRC-FETU projects while developing their own projects. Applicants with track record of research in the research foci of the PRC-FETU (i.e. energy technologies and utilisation) are encouraged to apply, though preference will be given to those with research portfolios related to:

  • Low emission coal technologies (excluding carbon storage / sequestration)
  • Renewable energy systems for biomass, solar thermal and geothermal energy
  • Energy storage (both electro-chemical and thermo-chemical)
  • Energy efficiency in housing and process industries

The researchers from PRC-FETU are actively engaged with the University's federally funded Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources (NIER) and utilise its laboratories, facilities and infrastructure. NIER is also a world-class research organisation with the explicit mission of facilitating demand driven research within the minerals, energy and resources sector. NIER was established with a clear agenda to provide a new collective based model for critical research in energy and resources. Through the NIER model, research capacity is harnessed within the University of Newcastle, across the national research sector and with our international partners to focus on next generation energy production and distribution solutions, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, resource sustainability and energy efficiency in the resources sector. These research priorities are of critical significance and aligned with the energy reform agenda of government, industry and community. NIER brings together the University's leading energy and resources researchers from a number of Priority Research Centres including PRC-FETU.

As the Lecturer/Senior Lecturer - Energy Technology and Utilisation, you will:

  • Carry out high quality collaborative research of international standing, in priority areas mentioned above, funded by competitive grants;
  • Develop successful and world class teaching initiatives in delivering undergraduate courses in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and/or Chemistry;
  • Develop and enhance external networks and strategic partnerships, collaborating with business, industry, government and community regionally, nationally and internationally;
  • Contribute to supervision of undergraduate design projects and final year honours theses; and
  • Share administrative responsibilities with other academics in the Discipline.

Skills and experience

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • PhD in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline;
  • A substantial track record of high quality research publications (in terms of journal impact factor, citation, H-Index) in energy technologies and/or utilisation particularly in one or more of the following application areas at a national and international level:
-    Low emission coal technologies (excluding carbon storage / sequestration)
-    Renewable energy systems for biomass, solar thermal and geothermal energy
-    Energy storage (both electro-chemical and thermo-chemical)
-    Energy efficiency in housing and process industries

  • Demonstrated experience of working on research projects collaboratively across disciplines locally, regionally and internationally, including the ability to coordinate research projects;
  • Proven evidence of having a high level of interpersonal and teamwork skills including excellent written and verbal communication skills; and
  • Experience in undergraduate teaching (desirable).
