Chief engineer (data management) at the Geophysical Institute

Job Details

The University of Bergen is offering a vacancy for a 12 month position as chief engineer at the Geophysical Institute. The position is linked to the NFR-project GeoAccessNO and the project Bjerknes Climate Data Centre.

 

Work tasks

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Assisting scientists in archiving model output data for the Bjerknes Climate Data Centre
  • Survey existing systems and procedures for data archival applied within the geoscientific community in Norway
  • Investigate data management procedures for both digital and physical data, including (standardized) documentation, sharing and preservation
  • Survey of the implementation of unique identifiers for physical samples such as the International Geo Sampling Number 
(IGSN)

 

Qualifications and personal qualities

  • The applicant must have completed a master degree in oceanography, biology, earth sciences, mathematics, or other relevant fields.
  • Excellent knowledge of scientific model output data is a prerequisite.
  • Experience with data management and knowledge of international standards (e.g. IGSN) is strongly desirable.
  • Detailed knowledge of the Norwegian scientific landscape and how scientific data is made available will be an advantage.
  • The applicant must be able to work independently and in a structured manner.
  • The successful candidate will work in a lively and international research environment. As the position requires contact with an international research group, willingness to travel, diplomatic skills, and firm knowledge of the English language are mandatory.
